I was trying to format the card but kept getting a message thart the memory card is locled Slide lock to the write position. Where is the write position on this. This is my firsrt digital I'm an old negative photographer and finally stepped up to the new age. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think there is a little button on the side of the card you can slide to unlock it

If you find it difficult understanding all the menus and features of your new camera I highly recommend David Busch's excellent book on the D3400. It is an excellent camera that is capable of turning out excellent photos. Have fun with it and welcome to the forum.

I don't know about the lock (I use CF) but there are alot of old negative photographers here. But there are a few positive ones.

Thank you for the advice. Bewing my first digital I'll have to get use to the lightroom instead of darkroom. Many good experiences in the darkroom. I have kept my Nikon F2 and nikkormat incase I decide to set up another darkroom. I have been kicking around the idea of teaching young adults the film and darkroom life. I was shocked to see you van still buy new darkroom equipmaen. Thanks again, Rick

Should be no problem for you! Film and digital are all the same except that digital is a bit more affordable. You can see a digital amateur photographer can immediately get Lightroom. What's the percentage of film amateur photographers had Darkroom?

I’m a huge digital convert, from the film days. There are so many advantages to shooting digital over film, that I won’t even bother to try to list them all.

But let’s not try to fool ourselves to believing that digital is more affordable than film. Folks who say that often point to the costs associated with buying film and processing it vs. shooting as many images as you want for “free?” in digital.

To prove my point, try to sum up what you’ve spent on digital photography for the past ten years (cameras, lenses, software, all related costs) and compare to any ten year period that you shot film. Try to normalize those costs into today’s dollars. Film would be far cheaper.

All that being said, “digital rules,” ... but maybe buy a film SLR and lens for a couple hundred bucks and play around shooting with it?

Digital is cheaper any way you look at it and especially when you talked about software. When you buy the software that's equivalent of buying a darkroom. Not too many amateurs back in the film they can afford to have a darkroom.

That’s like comparing apples and oranges. You’re assuming those who shot film also had a darkroom. That was never the case. They just sent their film to a lab to get processed.

So you don't have to buy any software either. You can simply send your files to the lab. But digital allow you to have the equivalent of a darkroom at an affordable price. A real darkroom back in the film days was not so affordable. That's why I say digital is much less expensive than film.

You actually just proved my point. You don’t need post processing software to shoot digital ... just like you don’t need to have a darkroom to shoot film.
