Hi all, thinking I need a travel tripod that is smaller than my RRS big guy. Needs to extend to my 6 foot height and hold my Sony 7 R III with a long lens without vibrating like a tuning fork. Want to be able to put it in my carry on bag too. What is your favorite travel tripod? Thanks!

IMHO a travel tripod that extends to 6 feet must have at least 4 to 5 legs and who fully extended will be like a tuning fork.

I think that is not a reasonable requirement for a travel tripod. That is why I use right angle viewers and flip LCD screens. My travel tripods need to fit inside my backpack (<14 inches)

For truly portable use, I use a Sirui T-1205x. Or I use a Promaster carbon leg set with an Acratech ballhead that I store separately in the bag.

Consider one of the big Gorillapods for travel.

I have found it difficult to find a STURDY 6 foot TRAVEL tripod. Personally I have left my tripods at home while traveling. They tend to slow me down and I find I miss shots because of the time delay involved. If you are traveling alone by all means take it, but if your with a traveling companion or in a group you may find your tripod experience diminished by those looks from the people around you while they wait for you to complete your task time and time again. Boy, that can get old.

If you have a large camera/lens, you can still use a small ball head if you balance the weight. Use a nodal rail slide to back the camera body off-center from the ball head. I recommend 120mm as a good length for larger cameras.

I kinda like this one - not really a travel pod but might work for such

Has 32mm top tube which means the bottom (5th) section is still large enough to be of use. 5 sections means it folds down relatively small. It may be high enough that you would not have to deploy the 5th section - MORE stabil that way ! The 45mm ball head has a panning feature on the TOP section.

And Here is a good 4 section legs only ! - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Novo-Explora-T20-Carbon-Fibre-Pro-Tripod-Legs-Only/302821447719?epid=2292856859&hash=item4681909827:g:IOEAAOSwjW5bWwLQ:rk:20:pf:0

Nice tripod, but it does have 12 locks to open and close before you can use it. Personally I like to travel without a tripod. Especially if I am in a group. No one likes to wait while someone sets up a tripod, shoots a shot, then retracts the legs. And, if the person carries the tripod around with the legs extended they will find themselves in a bind in most crowded tourists locations. In fact, many travel agencies and tourists spots now frown upon tripod use. Most churches and museums will not allow tripods, and the list of prohibited locations grow, I wonder why.

One of the compromises for a "travel" pod. .........yes, tripods can be very dangerous in crowded/close quarters !
