Hi, I'm Russ. Started photography in 1974. Lot of years in film (obviously). Was pretty good at it; did a lot of scenic work, tried making a living doing news when I lived in Denver-no luck lol. Had some success with automotive, including 3 magazine covers. Went DSLR in 06. Been kinda slack last 4 years, want to get 'back into it'. Lately doing some work with local music artists, finding out good results live are limited. Also started doing video with my Rebel T3i. Took the plunge yesterday and bought a nice used EOS 5D. Always looking to learn, remember some things I did almost without thinking, and certainly can use advice on video, especially the audio portion.

Welcome. We have a section on video. If you click on "Home" at the top of the page and scroll doen through all the posts, just above the section that shows which members are currently signed in, you'll see, "ALL SECTIONS:" Clicking on that will reveal all the different sub-forums available to you, one of which will be the video section. One of the recent threads is about, "getting started." I haven't read it but it might reveal some good pointers for you. As for sound, a lot of folks like to use Rode mics which you can research using Google, of course.

As a would-be hack with limited experience, since many of the dslr activities are sometimes picked up by a mic that's mounted on the camera, I prefer a free-standing reasonably good quality digital recorder nearby for ambient sound and afterwards, blending/syncing the ambient soundtrack in during editing. Not sure which 5d you have but they have been a favorite for video since the release of 5d2 in 2009 with other brands nipping at their heels. You should be able to get a lot of pleasure from yours. With 4k, Sony kinda got a jump on Canon but I suspect Canon will hold their own. Youtube and Vimeo are good for educational resources and both offer a platform to display your work and even make a few bucks if you're interested.
