I have the 7d2 which has a nice burst rate but gets pretty noisy at higher ISO's. I also have the 5d3 that does a nice job with higher ISO's but weak on the burst rate. Is the 1DXM2 a worthy solution? (I have 4 grand kids in various stages of indoor sports.)

If it fits your budget, the IDX MKII is a great solution - good at high ISOs plus a burst rate higher than the 7D2. If you’re a Canon shooter, it’s the ultimate high burst rate high ISO pro body.

I had two 7dmkll's and replaced them with a 1Dx mkl. The 1Dx is twice the camera, so yes, quite worthy and I assume the mkll might be 3x's the camera!!!

Another less expensive option would be a 5D mk IV. Doing 4K frame capture is similar to virtual 30 fps. Plus the 5D mk IV has better resolution than the 1DX mk II.

Canon was kind enough to make the 1-Dx do about anything you ask of it. If saving a few dollars is in your realm then get a copy of the Mk I. The differences are negligable unless you need 4-K video and a Fast CF card reader/writer. Mine is one of the finest pieces of equipment that I own. Nobody's grandkids can out-run the camera. 14 fps is lightning speed, seldom needed but fun to have. Canon still lists the Mk I in the refurb catalog. Some might say the 5-D Mk IV would suffice but it is NOT a 1 series body and that is a huge difference. When you do the math valium would be cheaper but not as much fun for YOU! Either of the 1 series bodies would be a thrill for you, go after your glory!

I did a lot of comparisons before I purchased my copy in October 2016. It is it best high ISO Canon even now and it does everything I want in a single body. With a 128gb CFast card I can shoot about 5k of RAW images. It has about the same resolution as a 5D3 which was the Canon standard for a long time for many shooters. It is costly and heavy with the built in vertical grip and robust build. I was used to and love the integrated vertical grip from my 1D Mk III. I like how the body balances out the weight and size of larger L lenses. Flicker control is another nice feature for shooting in some poor indoor situations too. If you are willing to understand what it is and spend the money I don't think you will be disappointed.

Ignore anybody who recommends the 5DIV over the IDXII. I have both and the 1DXII is my go to camera 99% of the time. The only time I take the 5DIV out is when it’s inconvenient to take the 1DXII out. As Canons flagship camera it is head and shoulders above the rest. If you can afford it buy it, you will not be disappointed. Before anybody jumps in about the weight, yes it is a consideration. Having said that I carry mine with a 500mm and a 1.4 extender mounted on a Gitzo tripod over my shoulder up hill and down for several miles.

All the pros think it is.
They make a living at the high rate burst and frequent poor lighting conditions and fast action.
Look at the over dominance of 1DX MII on the sidelines when you watch major sporting events.
They need speed and low noise.
No DSLR is faster and still able to maintain AF and metering than the 1DX MII.

I'm happy with the crop factor of the 7d2 for softball / baseball. It just doesn't do well when the ISO is cranked up indoors.
Just trying to get an opinion of how the 1d compares with the 5d at higher ISO's.
I'm also kind of curious about auto focus - is it a function of the camera or the glass?

Thanks for the input. I'm not a fan of noise & from what I've been reading, the 1D handles it as well as the the 5d, which I'm good with.

Thanks for the input! It's what the reviews suggest but it's nice to get the opinions of the real world users.

I have the 7D MKII and it's great for day shooting of sports. When the sun goes down and the ISO goes up....NOISE, NOISE, NOISE. Saving my pennies to get a DX MII. A photo buddy let me use his 1 DX MII to shoot a football game that went from day to night. Besides the frame rate the way a ISO is handled is amazing. There is no comparison of the two, Night and Day difference. I would stay with the 7D MKII for day jobs and use the 1 DX MII for evening, night and indoor sport shooting. Good luck if you can afford this item, I'll just have to bite the bullet and keep saving.

Here is a chart from Photostophotos.net of DR vs ISO which might be helpful. You also have in camera high ISO noise reduction which the 5D4 probably has but not sure the 7D2 has. The 5D4 is close in this DR range, but that is not exactly noise or each other factor. I personally have shot at ISO from 10,000 to over 25,000 with useable results. Most of this shooting has been drag racing at night. If you want I will suggest you check out Jeff Cable's blog and Mark Rebilas Facebook and website. Both shoot with 1D Mk II. Mark is a true master of action shooting... www.rebilasphoto.com and www.markjrebilas.com and click the blog side...

Best,
Todd

If you beleive DXOMark’s DR charts and tabulations, the DR and low light/high ISO performance of the IDX2 is roughly equal to the 5D4 and better than the 5D3.

I sold my 7D ll and bought the 1DX Mark ll. and never looked back. It can do anything you ask of it. I have many indoor events and outdoor sporting events with my grandchildren. This camera can take anything you throw at it and produce great results. Bab
