This seems to be an article very intelligently written. It addresses what is going on. As long as these manufacturers are willing to build cameras, we will have cameras. And I think he is right about the sharing of photos; the more and faster of that built into the camera can make it more desirable. The down fall of the cellphone picture is the user wants a super thin cellphone but can not find one with the 24-200 f2.8 or f4 zoom in it. For that one needs a camera. The more intergrated into the communication technology, the easier to sell. Thank you for presenting the article to us UHHs.

Many seem to forget that SLRs were a niche market virtually their entire existence.
Canon with the AE-1 wildly expanded the niche market but it was still a very limited market.
It is just going back to where it was before the AE-1.
There will always be enthusiasts and pros clamoring for a quality camera over the Instamatic (Now called a cell phone) so the market will remain. The question becomes who survives and to what level?

Agreed. They all could treat it as a niche item that they want to aways carry - as long as they, on the average, break even or make a small profit. From this article, one must assume that none the manufactures want to give up their portion of the niche. They will just innovate and accept their portion of a smaller market. Until someone invents a way to integrate a super zoom into a razor thin cellphone, cellphones and cameras will both exist.

I would say that there are a small percentage of us that uses a big camera. The cell phone has taken away a lot of the camera business. Look at an audience taking pictures of a celebrity. Do you see anyone holding up a camera?

Only the ones that have their cameras along and know how to use them. There are not many left that carry their cameras everywhere - unless it is their cellphone camera. Some with foresight may have brought their cameras, but it is not likely to be many and more likely to be only a very, very few.
