After I got a new HD monitor and replaced my 15? year old photoshop/bridge with online photoshop, my computer crawls.
Only have 4 GB Ram on my 7 year old dell vostro and bestbuy says I can only increase to 8 GB RAM and he doesn't recommend it and they won't order the extra RAM.
So Thinking of new computer that needs to last many years.
I do PC. I am thinking of 16 GB RAM, some SS storage rather than hard drive. Not at all sure about what I need in terms of internet related software on computer
My camera is Nikon D800 36 mega pixels and I usually come back with almost 5Gbytes of pictures after an outing.
Thinking of a Dell SPS Tower Special Edition 8930 ... but its very pricey ....
... and I don't think I'll ever join the gaming world.
Would appreciate any suggestions.

Gaming computers usually are better for photo editing. Guess it's because of the extra memory and faster processors. I've not updated my computer in 3 years so I'm not much help.

I generally look in the Workstation section (bot Dell and HP have this section)

There are online DIY where all parts are listed. They give levels of $ spent. I built mine at the beginning of 2016 using previous years gaming parts which are sold reasonably. You can not plug wrong thing in the wrong place, often color-coded... cables are foolproof.

I built many computers for the company I work for but I always bought mine. Never like the case. At work I have the machinist make the case for me. Can't afford that for my own computer.

Linda, with editing, memory is more important than outright speed. That and a very good graphics card. For example, the Intel i5 processor is a bit under the i7. It also costs less. The i7 is more desirable for gaming. However, for editing photos, the i5 is more than adequate. As for RAM, get as much as the processor can address. That is more important.

As for a HD, SSDs are fine. They aren't very large, or at least affordable at large sizes. I'd consider a second larger drive for storing your photos. Perhaps a couple, even if they are external, such as G-Technology drives, to store and backup your photos.

If you have a couple of drives dedicated to backups, you'll be more than suitably equipped.

I would suggest something like the one I built (and yes, it's easy to build one)
Cpu, i7-7700 or i7-8700 or i5-8400
Ram, 16GB ( could later expand to 32GB, if needed
Ssd, 500GB (preferably an M2) (I like Samsung)
HDD, 2 DISKS in RAID 1 (mirrored) size depends on your need.
Use SAD for programs and relocate library folders to RAID drives
AIO water cpu cooler
Video card - Nvida 1960 6gb or better - don't use the new 2xxx series.
Card reader - usb 3
Optical drive - blu-ray (or DVD) that supports M disks
Windows 10 Home or Pro if you are going to use Remote Desktop

Now I have a much better idea of what someone needs who uses his computer for his photos
No I won't be building mine but I have a much better idea of what to look for when I shop
