The Photo Ark

Following a "60 Minutes" segment about it, my wife gave me National Geographic's coffee table book "The Photo Ark" offering a sampling from Joel Sartore's (12 year and ongoing) project to photograph every living creature in captivity. Why in captivity? Because there are numerous species that are extinct in the wild but still being bred in captivity. For those of us who photograph animals, these photos are truly humbling. Sartore manages to not only provide technically and artistically perfect photographs, but to also give the viewer an emotional connection to the subject. Would that I had his talent! The creatures in the book are not presented in any sort of scientific order and on opposing pages, Sartore often shows two completely different species that share a common characteristic. I highly recommend you add this to your library.

Regardless of your level of technical and/or artistic talent, "I'm from NG" gets him access that you will never get.

Had the good fortune to hear him speak, and see his slideshow, here in FL. You are right Fred, NG gets him through a lot of doors closed to the rest of us, but, this guy is good. No doubt about it.

Joel Sartore also teaches photography for The Great Courses and is a good educational investment.
