Addendum - mine are WD "My Passport" pocket drives, but they look like the "Easy Store", not the current My Passport model.
It says they are portable. Are these something you would take with you on a shoot? I was going to buy a WD My book today. This one is cheaper but I don’t know if it’s right for a desk top situation. What’s your advice?

No, I would not take it on a shoot, but when I go to Maine for a week and take the laptop, I do take one.
I back up my desktop data (images, .doc, .xls, .pdf, etc.) on one (My monitor has two USB connectors on the side of it), and use the other for laptop backup when traveling.
This is primarily directed at people not yet backing up their system(s).
I use them in addition to Carbonite.
The My Book I had for YEARS was not a portable, it required to be plugged in to an AC adapter and was much larger footprint.
When it finally died, I purchased the pocket drive, mainly for its portability. It is powered by the USB connector.
Advice in selection? Either. One is just more portable, and smaller. As with any disk drive, do not jostle either when it is running.

The my book I have is powered by usb and the ones I see on Amazon are also. Must be newer models. I can get 8TB for $160 or 4 TB for $90.

Yes, they improved the power supply then. I suppose pick one? Small or large.
Mine are 1Tb, and will hold three backups for me (under 300Gb each backup, so far).
I just delete the older backup set of the three before I add the next.
I don't use the backup software that comes with them (been programming for over 45 years), I made a batch file to run my backup.

I pulled the trigger. Hard not to at that price. My last "My Passport" purpose did not go as planned, and their tech support was abysmal. But for eighty bucks...

If I didn't need one now, I would also. (Still considering it in the back of my mind.)
Sorry to hear you had a problem.
I've been using them for years (on Windows). My bookend was over five years old, always connected.
I've always had great luck with WD Caviar drives also. I recently put a 2Tb WD Gold in my desktop.

it is 4”x3”x.8” in size so you could take it on a shoot. But a SSD would be more rugged and more suited for that type of environment.
I never cared for WD drives because of reliability concerns. Maybe they have improved? It gets 4 of 5 stars on Amazon out of 1637 customer ratings.

I Never had a problem with WD Caviar or Segate Barracuda drives, which have been made at least since the 1990's.

I did not buy online so I did not get the USB.
Not sure if the sale is still on at the store.
