In late June early July there are 4 of us taking a 2 week trip to Newfoundland to photograph the icebergs, birds and whales. Of course this will be done on the east coast. We are planning on 1 week around Gander (icebergs) and moving south for 1 week to St. Johns. (whales) I have heard so much about Gros Morne park but assume it is such a huge place it would take minimum of 3 days to barely scrape the surface. Also it is in the opposite direction from what we have planned. So, for those in the know, what would you do??? Returning at a later date is an option but the bucket list of places we have is extensive and we ain't gettin any younger so we need to take that into account as well.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Gander is land-locked, are you planning to use it as a jumping off point for Twillingate? We were in NFLD a few years ago about the same time and drove from St. John’s to St. Anthony for icebergs and whales. I had been told that this was one the best areas to see them; we missed them by a couple of weeks but saw plenty of whales. It is a long drive but you do go past Gros Morne, which is an excellent example of a fiord; there is a tour boat that takes you into the fiord. Also, the St. Lawrence coast is beautiful and L’Anse aux Meadows, the Viking village is interesting and near St. Anthony. We were very fortunate as leaving the area to head back south we saw a lynx during the daytime.

I envy you. We loved our travels to Newfoundland years ago but we concentrated our time on the west coast. We loved Gros Morne, Labrador, L’Anse Au Meadows and Blow Me Down Provincial Park near Corner Brook. We did all that in six days and wish we had at least another week. Our trip was in mid August so no icebergs. We saw three autos with bad damage after they each hit a moose within our three hour drive on the main road to Corner Brook so be careful. We plan to get to the East Coast next year but wish we could return to Gros Morne for some photos and hiking. Not the best food but great scenery and people. Have a great trip!

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping for more of a "would you put a 4 day thumbscrew to the planned iceberg, whale and bird tour to head west to Gros Morne or stick with the east coast plan" reply.

I know Gros Morne is beautiful and photogenic but the icebergs, whales and birds are on the east coast and don't run on a specific schedule so it may take a few days to capture any good scenes. Up north in St. Anthony would be best for the icebergs, bigger and more plentiful but that would mean at least 4 days on the road and as luck would have it, they do travel south past Twillingate (which is "around" Gander) so we have decided on the current Gander to St. Johns itinerary. On the flip side, the whales and birds head north past St. Johns so hopefully we can capture everything both coming and going so to speak. Wouldn't it be heaven to capture a whale breaching in front of a huge berg with a flock of puffins flying by?

We went there in order to go to Gros Morne, so everything else was simply consequential. I wouldn't miss it.

Done a tour from L’Anse au medow to stjohn in second week of June last year and enjoy nice weather and we’re able to take to sea and closed up on iceberg but no whales, I’d be going back if I could

Also look into the Elliston area. Puffins, Puffins and more Puffins. Cape St. Marys for thousand of Northern Gannets.
