Looking into purchasing a remote shutter release for the Nikon D500 -- which one do you use and why?

I use the Pluto trigger - it works both as a remote trigger and a trigger for light, sound, motion etc.

I use the Nikon setup. Aside from being a remote trigger it also allows control of remote flash (SB5000) from the screen on the back of the camera. My initial reason for getting it was to trigger a flash on the other side of a wall from the camera. I did not look at any others, although I imagine there are others that do the same thing.

Remote Controller units use radio frequencies to communicate;

If you are only looking for a finger-press remote, I agree completely with MT Shooter that the RFN-4s at Amazon is the way to go. It's reliable, small and most importantly doesn't need the hotshoe which is almost always holding a flash or flash controller when I want to use the remote.

I think it really depends on your budget. I use https://www.amazon.com/RFN-4s-Wireless-Shutter-Release-connection/dp/B005PCDSBQ What I like most about this trigger is how small it is.
I also use Pocket Wizards with an ACC cable. Pocket Wizards seem to be the industry standard but come at a price.

A MIOPS does the same thing as a Pluto.
I have bought a MIOPS. It is worth the money.
There is a light, sound, laser, mode, and a couple others.
They also have a water drop. Splash Unit that is a kick in the butt
MIOPS has a app for a cell phone or tablet, that you can control the units with.
Basically, you can use your phone as a wireless remote.
Chech out thier website

I went with a Neewer remote release / timer. Actually have 2, one for a D7200, and the other works on my D500, D800, and D850 with the Nikon 10 pin connector. The one you want is at https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Digital-Intervalometer-Control-Fujifilm/dp/B003G40EGC?SubscriptionId=AKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q&tag=duckduckgo-d-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B003G40EGC . You can't go wrong for $20.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I will start researching the one's listed. A remote that uses a smartphone app will not help me - in Montana there is very limited cell service where I go - so I never even take my phone in the field with me - one less thing to carry!

Yeo - looked at that one before buying the Pluto. Basically same functionality but the MIOPS is about $100 more than the Pluto

You don't need cell service for the apps to work - they connect via bluetooth which works just fine without the phone having a cell signal

I purchased on of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005PCDSBQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and I'm quite happy with it.

Ya - I understand that but just never take the cell phone with me - I leave my cell phone at home as much as possible :)
