Late Fall afternoon shot with an unexpected PS result

Today was a rare one this year, the sun was shining! The colors near my house weren’t great but they were there to some degree. So, I persuaded my wife to drive ne to a state park (Promised Land SP) about 30 miles away so I could take an image or two.
When we got there it wasn’t at all what I hoped for. Most of the color was gone and the wind was a steady 15 or more! Not wanting to go home empty handed, I left the tripod in the car, took a couple of readings and cranked the ISO up to 800, the shutter speed to 1000 and the ap to f16.
This is what I was able to do with a set of 5, hand held 85mm images stitched in PS. And yes the orange and yellow are ‘pumped’ a bit. The thing that really got my attention is the water. The wind was whipping it hard enough that it was showing white caps and I thought PS could stitch it without obvious miss matches which would have me toying with healing brush tools. Nope! I didn’t have to do a thing with the water!!

The colors and foreground are nice but I see other problems here. For me, the shot is yelling for more sky. Nothing is as sharp and crisp as I would like and here are a few things to consider.

First, look at your settings. The biggest problem is f/16. Unless your lens is f/8, then you are below the sharpest aperture. I do not know about your lens but with mine, the fall off in optical quality is very striking. The old saw that the sharpest aperture is often two stops down from the maximum is probably true here too. Also, you are shooting at infinity so you do not need the depth of field from f/16.

Next issue: your shutter speed. Even with that breeze, the camera movement should not be enough to affect the image. I would imagine that 1/250 is fast enough. Between that and opening the aperture to around f/8 or f/5.6, the ISO can drop to around 100 or 200. With that ISO, you will pick up even more sharpness through the reduced noise.

As for the print itself, I prefer something with a bit more contrast so I would adjust dehaze, clarity, tonal range, contrast and vibrancy accordingly. Note how the haze increases to the right. I would fix that too. A final comment. I do not like the tree on the right. I would get rid of that with content-aware. Since I like the sweep of the view, I would prefer not to crop it away.

PS And next time, drag the tripod along.

Thank you
PS; The light weight travel tripod that I had with me would have been useless in that wind. I wanted the branch, that image was stitched from 5 separate ones, minimally cropped and I have the look I wanted.
