Traffic Jam on El Capitan

October is high season for big wall climbing in Yosemite. This past Thursday I had an opportunity to spend time in El Capitan meadow watching the heavy traffic of elite climbers on the southwest and southeast walls of El Capitan. There was a bottleneck of four or five parties below the œGreat Roof. The horizontal shadow within the red box (near the top) is caused by an overhang that is called the great roof and with the light-colored horizontal veins are useful landmarks for finding climbers on what is known as the œNose Route. These amazing climbers are all more than 2000 feet above the valley floor. There are 13 or 14 individuals in the second shot. Please try the downloads.

These guys, for the most part, are skilled world class climbers. Now the speed climbers and solo free climbers may truly be crazy, but Alex Honnold seems like such a rational young man! A film of his most recent climb will soon be making us all uncomfortable. Thanks for the comment Larry!

Wow captures, Phil! Even if I were able, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be willing but you can only admire the nerve and ability of these climbers!

A lot braver than I am. Not a sport for me. I don't even like climbing a ladder.

Excellent shots! While I admire their skill and fortitude, this is why helicopters were invented...

Thanks Carol, these folks are all world class climbers who put skill, knowledge and ability ahead of nerve. Brave dilettantes can lose their lives and endanger the lives of others. I admire them too!
