I have LR Classic on a desktop and laptop. I have duplicate RAW images in both locations. When I edit a photo in the Develop module on the laptop, what is the easiest way to bring the edited image into the desktop. I know this has been asked before but I couldn't find the answer.

Export it; button bottom left. It will prompt for destination (email, cd/dvd or hard drive/desktop) among other things. If you want to use it for email or social media you will likely need to reduce the file size. If you want to take it to a printer you'll likely need to change the file designation from raw to jpeg or tiff.

What I do is sync the two devices with Adobe Cloud so you have the edits in both places. The problem with the first response is that you do not have the history of edits in case you want to undo something and if you do want to edit the imported file, it is a jpg with less flexibility to edit.

Joe, you'll get workable responses to your dilemma. If it were me, I'd put the catalog/previews/images on an external drive and move the drive to whichever system I would be working on. That assures only one copy of the image you're working on.

Joe,

Did you "import" files from the camera card to both computers?

Have you "developed" the same images differently on both computers?

Do you mind having multiple versions of an image on the desktop computer?

Are you asking about what to do with a lot of existing images? How many?

Or are you asking what to do in the future with two computers?

First off, I believe that having two separate and distant catalogs with the same images can be a recipe for disaster. Having said that, you will need to learn how to export and import as a catalog. This will allow any edits you made in one catalog to be transferred to the second catalog with the same exact image with the same exact name. The application finds by image name. Read the LR help guide on the adobe online site to learn how to export/import a catalog correctly. You can export one image, a handful of images, a collection, etc. and they will all match up as long as the names are the same across catalogs.

This requires solid and consistent approach to file management. In Lightroom - go to Edit=>Catalog Settings->Metadata - and make sure the "Write changes to xmp" box is ticked. I suggest that you use a NAS drive, and alternately edit the image with either the laptop or the desktop. This way you can have a catalog on your laptop and another one on your desktop, but the xmp will be the common "thread" between the two catalogs - and it will always have the most current edits. That will avoid the inevitable problem of having to update, export. end up overwriting edits, etc.

Alternately you can just copy the xmp file from the last place you edited the image to the other device.

I would not make duplicate images - that is just asking for trouble.

Thanks, this seems like the answer I was looking for; I am going to give this a try.

Bruce, thanks for your response. I’m thinking that for the long term your suggestion will worl best for me.

Bill, thanks for helping. My unsophisticated backup method is to import from the camera card to both computers. I normally only edit on the desktop but I did edit a couple of images on the laptop recently because I had Silver Efix on there but not the desktop. I just resolved that and have Silver Efix on both. I can see that editing on both creates unnecessary confusion.

Thanks for responding. I see now that it is a recipe for disaster.

Thank you, Gene. I am going to try to implement the file management approach you have outlined going forward.

In general agreement with all the above suggestions, except I keep my catalogue on Dropbox. It is always available so long as you have internet access. Dow,oared images are on an external hard drive. Lightroom library module references the location in hard drive. The key to success with Lightroom is a consistent workflow so you and Lightroom always know where your images and edits are. Of course, everything has one or more backups, depending on the commercial/emotional value of your images and your own degree of paranoia.
