My wonderful daughter-in-law will be 50 next month. Over the last 10 years she has become an excellent photographer with her Nikon 5300 (18-300 lens) and Sony RX100 M1 -- but they are about worn out. Her job has her traveling a lot -- both domestic and international -- so she takes a lot of travel pictures but also many family shots. She processes in Lightroom and publishes Shutterfly books.

Seems like a good time to move to a mirrorless system. Smaller and less weight than the Nikon 5300 would be good. I have read a bunch of reviews, but not sure about full frame vs M43, size, etc.

My son will buy the camera body, I'll pop for a lens. Hopefully a package under $3,000.

Thanks for your suggestions!

One more point. The E-M1 mrII can be easier to operate by the Super Panel than twirling the dials. Have the sales associate show it to you. Price for the two right now will be right at $3K for a professional level camera.

Look at the Sony a7 ii or iii
FF mirrorless camera systems
With a budget of 3000$ you can get the a7ii and the 24–105 f 4 lens and you can add a prime lens or the Sony/Zeiss 18-35 f4 lens
That would be a great gift
At the moment I would stay away from either the Nikon or Canon ff mirroless as thay are too new and both failed at their earlier tries at mirroless lenses

I like Sony but I would let her pick out the system she wants. Your camera gear is very personal, she needs to choose. I think it’s a wonderful thing to do for her.

I agree “gift certificate” would be the best fit for some one who is seasoned and more than likely already has a perty good idea of what she is interested in.

I have the Canon M5. Despite what was a general lack of interest for no really good reasons - the camera is great. APSc I think the same chis as the 80.
OK - not many lenses. but the 18-150 is small and powerful, with great results.
You can get the whole thing now for about $1,000. Its a bargain.

Yes, Gift certificates worth the $3,000, and watch her face light up! (And share with us her choices, please! : )

Sony, Fuji, Olympus or Panasonic are the obvious choices. I say this because they have been time tested. Canikon mirrorless is just too new. They may be formidable in the future, but not now.

I totally agree with this poster. Also the photographer should make the choice. You have to hold the camera and see how it feels. I switched from Nikon to Fuji, but I’d also look at Olympus and Sony. Also look at usedequipment from reputable dealers ie b+h etc also around holiday time there should be deals from manufacturers.

There will be many, many suggestions out there. Right now is seems Sony has the lead but I suspect others are catching up fast. A starter Nikon mirrorless is about $1000.00 more than your current budget.
If you like wildlife photography I would go with the Nikon D500 because it has the new state of the art focusing system also found on the D850 and D5. But alas this camera is not small but it is currently on sale with a bonus battery grip and memory card and camera bag. Check it out, black friday deal in October.

Have you considered the new Nikon mirrorless system, especially the less expensive one that is soon to be released? That and the mid length lens might be an excellent package along with an adapter so she can continue to use her present Nikon lenses.

Consider mirrorless cameras from Fujifilm - X-T2 (probably used) or the new X-T3. Great features, exceptional image quality, creative options.

I agree. With a budget of up to $3000 I would be looking hard at the Fujifilm X-T2 or the newly released X-T3. Both are superb cameras, get excellent reviews, and have an excellent selection of outstanding lenses.

I know you'll hear about many options, but I just stepped up and bought the Canon M50, and with it the kit lens 15-45, and then added the 11-22 and 18-150, it is a very good setup for me.

For a complete and lightweight system look at Olympus which goes from beginner to pro level cameras and lenses.
Fuji would also be an excellent choice with the XT series.

Check Fujifilm, said they're never going FF.....plus as was stated before, why not upgrade the Sony to the latest model RX 10 IV

She is the only one who knows what she likes. Good intentions are great but don't make her have to live with a special gift that is not her top choice.

I wonder if it might be smart to consult the person who will actually be using the camera.
