Looks like Canon is making the EOS R system a real pro system.
That 54mm wide mount from 1987 of the EF being carried through in the new RF mount is paying dividends.
Nikon looks to be able to catch up as well as far as fast lenses but the Canon control ring is pretty brilliant and unique as well as programming the direction of turning the focus ring either direction depending on your preference with a simple program you set.
Look at these upcoming lenses.

PS the Sony mount is 46.1mm which put into perspective, the Canon EOS M mount is 47mm and is considered small.

Yes, Sony missed the boat with their small lens mount that, I believe, was never really meant for a full frame camera - only APS-c ! A very short sighted approach.

You are right but they also were touting that mirrorless is supposed to be so much smaller than DSLR. Where as we see there is a limit to how small a camera can be and still feel right and balance well with professional lenses. Sony totally missed the boat here where Nikon and Canon realized that pro fast and long lenses have to be physically large to an extent that physics and internal operations allow. The Sony 70-200 f2.8 is a monster just like the other ones are, can't get around it. But the petite body makes it less easy to hold and balance and that is where Canon and Nikon with pro backgrounds knew what to do to have the "Feel".

Personally, if I were to upgrade, it would be to a 5D4 and stick with my EF lenses, but if I was a pro shooting weddings and invested in Canon, i’d be all over this system. Silent with fast lenses (perfect for indoors and churches), good compatibility with my existing inventory, and a less expensive body.

The Canon EOS R is not a pro model/system, and that will stay that way! It is a mid-level camera, a "pro" model will be coming later!

I have to agree with you on that. It seems to be sandwiched between a 5D4 and a 6DII. It will need a generation or two to mature. I've heard speculations of a 1D style body mirrorless coming but who really knows. Canon remains pretty tight lipped about new releases. Both Canon's and Nikon's release appear to be water testing the market. They aren't fully committed cameras but I think Nikon pushed it further up the ladder with the Z7 than Canon's EOS R.

Yes, my comment is on PRO lenses being introduced. Similar to the 650/620 were not PRO models but were introduced with some incredible PRO glass showing what was coming.
It took a bit before Canon introduced the EOS 1 but when they did it was all over for the competition. But they took data from the first cameras to make adjustments. During that time the F-1/FD system remained in production.
