I've done a bit of research on line and the closest I can come up with is a laughing gull but still leaves a question mark for me. Note the black beak and eye.

vz,
I think you've got it. This is a Winter adult. Note the fairly dark back, dark bill and legs, the partial ring around the eye, the dark primary flight feathers and the white tips to the secondaries. These are all typical of this species in Winter. Good ID and good photo. jak
Thanks Jak. It appears you know your birds. vz
I know some...but no expert. When I'm with real experts, I feel humbled. Many sparrows are just LBBs (little brown birds) to me though I'm learning. And sandpipers and other wading birds? Lots of luck. But I have some great resources. I found a great drawing in the National Geographic Field Guide to Birds of North America that matched your photo so well that I am quite confident in the ID. I also find the iBird Ultimate Guide to Birds app very useful on my iPad. But thanks for the thanks. jak
Nicely done, vz. I concur on the ID.

Thanks Jack for looking in and giving me some positive "ink". vz
I can't help with the ID, Erik, but it's a lovely shot!

Thanks very much Sue. As I found in replies to this post, this is a laughing gull. vz
