I guess the perpetrator/piece of crap wanted to pass through the annals of time. Then again, Halloween is coming up, and what better party favor is somebody's colon?

Considering that it was in the back of a parked pickup truck, most likely in a box or carrying case, the thief saw it simply as something to easily steal and absconded with it. I doubt he/she knew what they were stealing other than here was a parked, unattended pickup with something in the back inviting them to steal it.
