I was shooting F! over the weekend, got home to download the 2k photos. After download some of the photos ended up with a preview, " file could not be found". Do you think I just attempt to reload from card again, or is there a way to find the missing photos. Probably a couple hundred with this note...thanks for ya'll's help folk's...

In my experience, errors that are flagged when reading from a Digital Card....are nearly all due to inadvertently rotating an image while it is ON the card, but in the PC reader slot.....and has not been off-loaded to a hard drive. Usually those can be corrected by reversing the 'rotate' function and trying again. It is for issues such as this, that I make it my practice to never 'mess with'...(technical term..!)...images that are on my digital card. This means that I don't delete, rotate or do anything else to my shots until I have all of the images safely on my hard drive.
Have I ever made this mistake?? Do you REALLY have to ask....

I have not tried to read them from the card. I just downloaded them to view thru LR. I didn't to anything to the images at all except to load on my external hard drive and while i was flippin' thru them noticed the "file could not be found" message when i attempted to do some basic editing...all the photos are still on my cards...hopefully...

You didn't by chance shoot some as jpg and some as raw did you? If the program doing the searching is set to jpg only you will never see the raw pictures, and, vice versa. I've learned this from experience!

Just to be safe, my SD cards go to the computer slot always with the "lock" engaged. Only the camera modifies files on the SD.
After they are on hard drive (and backuped up) the card is "unlocked" and place on card wallet to be ready to use. Before use I format them on camera.

Go directly to the folder on your hard drive where the photos downloaded. You should be able to just compare the number of files in the folder with how many shots you took, but also you could view the file names and see if there are any missing in the sequence, or you could view thumbnails and see if you notice missing subjects.

Doing this will at least let you know if the photos made it from the card to your computer. If they are all there, then it's something going on with LR (which I know nothing about ).

Definitely an odd situation. I hope there is a solution.

I think we are still missing some information from the OP.

I've learned, that the best thing to do is to copy the files from the card reader onto my hard drive and then import from the file/folder (I use elements organizer). That way I know they're on the hard drive and all the files are there. I've had instances where I've imported directly from the SD card, thought organizer imported them all, then went on to format the card only to find that, for whatever reason, it missed files. Which leads me to recommend a great recovery program for getting files back - EasyUS data recovery. Really, just got back from a 21 day trip to Europe and imported over 2500 photos just to find that it missed a day - the day we went on tour to the Coliseum and Forum - the highlight of the trip after I formatted the card.

I use TeraCopy for copying files from SD card to HDD, then import into LR. With details and verify options on, it will show progress of copy, report any errors, AND verify that the copy was successful ( burnt once a decade ago, learned my lesson). Use it for all my copy/moves. Freeware version sufficient.

Here's a very basic question for you:

Did you COPY the files from camera to external drive, or did you inadvertently create SHORTCUTS on the external drive?

Do you know the difference?

If you created shortcuts, then disconnected camera from computer, all you have on the hard drive are"markers" that tell the operating system to go to where the actual file is. If it can't, you get a "file not found" error.

In my experience as a computer technician, many many people who are "computer users" don't know basics about file management....moving...copying....creating shortcuts....what the difference is, and how to do them.

Still unclear on what the OP did. Was the download through an internal card reader, an external card reader, direct from the camera using a USB, by WiFi, by Bluetooth.....? Are the photos still viewable with the card in camera?

I assume he was "flipping through them" in LR. Did he try any other method of viewing them on the computer? Is he using Windows, Apple, Linux or some other system?
