I'm sure some of you may see these frequently, but it's a first for me. As far as I can tell, it's an "occasional migrant" to this area. Still, it was exciting to see this colorful and active bird in person. jak

Very nice! Where was this taken? When? The ones I have photos of are truly Vermilion, very intense red. And jet black wings. Maybe it's a seasonal thing. They are beautiful birds.

Taken this afternoon at the San Joaquin Marsh Ecological Reserve in Irvine, CA. It was quite intense but more of a Chinese red (a little orangish). Could be seasonal or age of the bird. My guide indicates that juveniles approach full adult color plumage by midwinter. Since we're not to winter yet, this may be a juvenile. The species is listed as a "scarce resident" of Southern California, which is why I've never seen one before. Thanks for the note.

Great shot. We have tons of these in Arizona and they vary in color intensity from bright vermillion to orange tones like this one.

I expected to see a plant like a Vermillion Fly Trap!! Now that I am at your thread, I will appreciate the colorful bird.
Jak86094, You got a lucky shot the bird is well posed and sharp and clear I congratulate you, the camera and the bird.

I was surprised how long the bird hung around. Like most flycatchers, they light on a branch where they have a view for flying insects. When they find their prey, they fly out to catch it then return, often to the same branch. Sometimes they will land in a second location, but may come back to the original on a subsequent flight. This bird hung around at the top of some moderate size trees right next to a walking trail for at least 10 and maybe 15 minutes, and since they were at the top of the tree, they were accessible to photographs...though not as near as I would have liked. Still, for a bird, that's a long time to be able to photograph them. It didn't even flee when I moved back and forth around the base of the tree to get better angles. So there was some luck involved in getting some decent shots. jak

Thanks. It was definitely a first for me. As I mentioned in another reply above, they are considered "scarce residents" in SoCal. I did note that their normal range includes southern Arizona. I'll watch for them next time I visit your beautiful state. Thanks.

dpullum,

Thanks so much. It took a while to get a decent pose. I was on a path next to a pond so I couldn't move around to the side of the tree where the best poses were available. Being cooperative, however, the subject hung around for 10-15 minutes, which was remarkable enough, but would fly out and return to the same or a nearby branch on multiple occasions. It didn't seem to be bothered by me or the camera, unlike many birds, and I was able to walk back and forth on the path to get different poses. Some of them were pretty good. Thanks for looking...even though it wasn't a bug-eating plant. Have a great day and week. I appreciate your kind remarks. jak
