Shot this morning leaving Alma, MI on an excursion run to her home base in Owosso, MI (Steam Railroading Institute). Also shot on film, Mamiya RB67 on HP5+.

Staked out my spot at 8:00 am.; two hours before departure. Fifteen minutes before departure, 4 other photographers shooting both video and still joined me. We all were able to stay out of each other's frame.

Twenty minutes after this (look at the clear blue skies) it clouded up and began to downpour. Patience and luck, indeed.

The feel of it passing by only five feet away was amazing. Still in town with a 10 mph limit. You could feel the heat of the fire box as she passed. The sound of the whistle is mesmerizing. It's interesting how different engineers have their "signature" cadence to the crossing blow.

I think what gets me most. is the depth of the smoke/steam, very nicely done, I can almost see the movement

Let's hope that the ones taken on the Mamiya are just as good. Both cameras tripod mounted. Mamiya zone focused.

Shoot D7200, shoot Mamiya - cock shutter/reset mirror/advance film/shoot Mamiya. Shoot digital (continuous high speed). Cock Mamiya shutter/reset mirror/advance film/shoot Mamiya. Hit quick release on tripod mounted Nikon and shoot the train as it passes behind me. Hectic 15 seconds and loving every minute of it.

Interestingly, one of the "late arriving" photogs looked at the front of the Mamiya to make sure that the lens shutter was actually closed. He later told me that he used to shoot with one and had a lens with a lazy shutter. He was astounded when I told him what I had paid for the camera.

This is her "Excurshion time." Fall color tours and "Santa Trains." I'm hoping to catch her on some of these runs.

Interestingly, my wife and I traveled her route that weekend and part of it paralleled US 127. Imaging those traveling along that highway and seeing that sight!
