New to the group.
Hello,
I am Chuck Callahan and I am new to this group and have been a photographer for about 40+ years. I have never been able to afford a fancy camera, as you all say - with its' own mortgage. The best camera I have is my old Pentax K1000, but the cost of film with all the pictures I take make it cost prohibitive to use and I have switched to digital like many others. I now have a Pentax X5 which I think is a pretty good camera. I look forward to hearing about various subjects and participating with the group.
I do have a question? Is Photoshop a norm when it comes to even the best of the best photographers producing some of the magnificently colored and detailed pictures we see on Nat Geo and other big venues or do the mortgage cameras really to that good?
How do you define a "mortgage camera?" My Nikon D850 cost me $3,300 for which I paid cash, so no mortgage involved. And to answer your first question, the majority of Photographers and Graphic Artists use Adobe products for their creative workflow. There are other alternatives, but they require mortgages.
No offense intended, but a camera of the same you have would involve me taking out a mortgage, but I would have to by a house first. Thanks for your reply. I have been trying to get as involved with the Adobe products as I can. I strive to take the best photos I can without having to use any tricks or software to make them the best I can.

Chuck, Welcome to the forum. I would start with Lightroom and then move to Photoshop. You can sign up on their new plan is for a monthly fee that includes photoshop.
You can also buy the stand alone disk on LR 6 but does not include latest and greatest as on the monthly lease.

Hi Chuck. Welcome aboard!
Mike
If you can't afford software like Lightroom or Photoshop, there are alternatives like Paint Shop and Paint Shop Pro.
I've never paid more than $3600 for a camera and one of my current favorites only cost just over $500 for full featured 24 megapixel DSLR. Lenses on the other hand can get real expensive.
Welcome to the forum.
It depends on your requirements for the processing software.
Elements 14 and/or Photo Impact Pro v.8.5 (in addition to the RAW editor) do everything "I" require.
Welcome to the HOG!
Some post is usually required, your experience should help limit the amount you need to do, check out Paint Shop Pro instead of Adobe, easier and less expensive, Bob.
Welcome! I get it as far as the budget goes - you can get great photos with whatever camera you have but post processing does help ;) Lightroom is what I use mostly (prob because I haven't mastered photoshop yet but also for just enhancing photos, I find Lightroom easier) and it is a bargain at $10 / month. Think of it as 5 McDonalds' hamburgers a month :D Wow what a deal! Have fun.
Chuck, Welcome to the Hog. Since you have been a photographer for about 40+ years I would think you would be familiar with Photoshop and what it does. My fancy Nikon D850 cost me $3,300.00 and my good quality Nikon D4 was close to $6,000.00. I have purchased a lens for as little as a few hundred dollars and also a few much more costly like my fancy Sigma 300 - 800 mm zoom for $9,000.00. No mortgages here, just successful business management and wise investing and financial planning decisions for fifty years. No mortgage on my home either. I think of the lens, light modifiers, filters and other such things as tools for photography rather than tricks. Software falls into the same category with tools that we use to create the photo we strive for. When you adjust your shutter speed, aperture or ISO do you consider them tricks and fancy do dads or as tools of the camera to produce the photo you want? A better tool doesn't make it fancy, it just makes it an updated tool. You might have a tool belt or a tool chest. That is up to you.
