Not sure I'm happy with the placement of his hands- posing- my weakest point.
Comments are appreciated.

Great. Lit with flash but does not look like it—just the way it is supposed to be. Love the highlight on the hair and you still have detail in the hair. Good pose and hands are fine. Background is super. Great job.

Thanks, Cliff! He wanted an “urban” setting but the day before the shoot decided the WW1 memorial would be good. (I agree) Had about 1/2 an hour to scout and saw the backlit staircase. Made sure that was the first location. Need to find a good source for posing ideas now.

Thanks.
Trying to make it look real is fun.

Looks good to me: hands are suitable for the pose, lighting is very nice, camera angle/height are good... if I had a criticism, it's the rising blob of shirt tail in an awkward place... but that's a minor circumstance.... All-in-all- Nice job.

My eye keeps going to his right hand. I've been advised to not show the flat of the hand, but to turn the hand so that the edge shows.

Nice job. First look was to the face and the highlight on hair. Don't believe the hands are a problem as they are. Looks like a senior shot the family would want to buy.

That edge-of-the-hand thing is true for women but not so much for guys. Certainly with young guys, the hands are pretty smooth and not distracting.

Agree with edge of hand exposure for women, to make hands look smaller and more graceful. I think the left hand in the portrait portrays a limp wristed, softer look that is not desirable in most circles. Tighten fingers, rest inside of wrist on knee and don't bend at the wrist. A loose fist is good in masculine poses.

Yes. I notice that shirt blob too....after I posted!
I need to be more alert to stuff like that.

Got too busy pontificating... Forgot to say that your portrait is altogether a fine job, especially with your management of light.

I especially like the diagonal line created by the staircase in the background- works well with the lines of the pose and sets off the subject well. Nice composition. As Cliff alluded to- fine flash usage! Good negative space- makes for a nice 30X40 print in a rustic kinda frame! The hands are fine- the shirt- well it's natural. Sometimes with men, fooling with their hands does not work and results in a stiff unnatural position. Also- young guys are never neatniks!
