I live on the Big Island. I use an 18x200 as my walk around lens. I take copters often on my island and Kauai and need the 18 for many of the shots. If you can, get a Lens with that type range & you only need one. Never heard of a copter not letting someone take a big camera unless they didn’t have a neck strap on it.
On the Big Island Paradise helicopters is the only one to do doors off. Great company & worth it. Flying now that the eruption is paused (or over) you can get really low and close. That wide angle is needed. If you mainly are interested in the eruptions paths & waterfalls fly from Hilo. Private message me & I will share a fixed wing I have found & fly now on my island.
Enjoy your trip it is a fascinating place & each island is very different. So glad you are coming to my island, it is a treasure most people don’t discover.
Aloha

All the replies are sincerely appreciated. And I still am not sure.
So, I've got this far: Take the 24-70 + 70-200; Leave the 16-35 home.; Take the 24-70 and 16-35 (just in case you need the wider view); 90% will be with the 24-70; why not take the 28-300- this one lens will do it all; the 24-70 will be good on the helo tour;....
Tomorrow I'm going to the Photo Expo show in NYC with a friend of mine who is an accomplished pro. He has every lens and more. Recently returned from Patagonia and Easter Island. He suggests taking the 28-300. Even though he does take a lot of lenses wherever he goes! Ken Rockwell likes the lens a lot. Photography Life and a number of other sites are hyper critical.
Still swimming upstream to work this out.

Hi all. Your suggestions and comments have been great! So, I decided that that I needed to consider just being able to go with the flow and enjoy touring with my wife with the least amount of decision making and 'intrusions'. To me, this means carrying as little as possible; both on my body and in my car (I hear you about break-ins). If I don't have the optimal lens for a shot...I'll be ok with that. If I was younger...hahaha; I would probably bring all my gear and regret the decision. I reached out to a number of published pros as well. And they all agreed with this concept. This isn't for business. Many of you said the same thing. And many stayed within my current kit and made great suggestions. I ordered the Nikkor 28-300 and will have it tomorrow. I will probably take my 16-35 with me (it is light). Mahalo to all!

And....Photo Expo was 'usual'. Just had the Expo Pass. I was surprised that more manufactures of accessories were not there. I did purchase 3 Hoya HD3 UV filters to replace my B&W filters. B&H did right. I am a believer in this extra protection and it has worked for me at least twice. I am switching over to the HD3 because they are 4x harder/stronger to impact without compromising quality. I'll keep the B&W as backups.
Also picked up the Optech SLR Wrist Strap for my helo tour. Figure the Black Rapid....very loose; with this Wrist Strap, will provide the peace of mind that I may need.
