I was walking in a local small nature reserve and only saw this one butterfly. It took for 45 minutes to try and get a decent sharp image...this is the best one I got but am really pleased with it as I don't have a high success rate with butterflies...shame about the dried flowers but if I cropped them out, I think the butterfly would be too close to the edge and would lose that "nature" feel.

Crop anyway. You can leave a little of the dried flower in.

Beautifull colors and I too think the composition is excellent as is.

I think it looks great just the way it is. Considering the position of the dried flowers and their muted colors, I don't think they draw attention away from the butterfly at all. I know my eyes went directly to the butterfly as soon as I saw it. Using the rule of thirds, it is very close just the way you have it. If I were to crop anything, I might just lose a VERY small slice of the background from the top and right side, but there is no need to even do that. Nice shot!

The past stage flowers add to the composition and make it different and interesting. It puts beautiful butterfly in its natural environment.

While living near Albany, NY I would pass through a natural area called the Pine Bush where there was a unique population of the Karner Blue butterfly that was protected as an endangered species and led to further protection of the entire Pine Bush area.

Thank you all for your kind comments...much appreciated. I entered this photo in my camera club's monthly competition where we get an outside judge.
The first thing he commented was about the "ugly dried flowers" and should have cropped them out!!!! I think then he realised that if I cropped them out it won't look so natural and changed his mind and was quite complimentary and gave me 9 out of 10 marks....Grace

Looks fine as is, and good tracking. They are very shy, and close to extinction here on the Indiana shore of Lake Michigan.
