I'm quite surprised at the difference in quality of each image captured of an object a little over a city block away:
1st image shown: benchtest1 - 400mm; F2.8; Prime
2nd image shown: benchtest3 - 400mm; F4.0; Prime w/1.4 Extender
3rd image shown: benchtest2 - 400mm; F5.6; Prime w/2.0 Extender
Think I'll put the extenders away and just crop images captured with the Prime lens if needed.

The first and third ones look OK to me. The second one looks like camera shake may have ruined it. I'd re-shoot that second one and see if the results are the same.
Thank you, I agree the second one is not as good as the others, that is why I posted them.
My amateurish method to make the comparison was to zoom in to the most close up view on the computer screen of #1 as possible. Then zoom the others to a point where they measured about the same size as #1 on the screen.
#2 & #3 were much more pixilated than #1 with #3 being the worst as one should expect when using extenders.
The shots were taken with the camera tripod mounted out on a balcony 17 floors up from the natural ground. I waited to click the cable release in-between gusts of wind and must have not waited long enough before clicking #2.
There might be time today to reshoot the experiment.
