My daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter moved to the UP (Iron River) a few months ago and my wife and I will be making our first visit next month just prior to Thanksgiving. I've been looking at online suggestions for UP photo opportunities but would like to see if any people here have suggestions for memorable photo sites. We'll be there several weeks, coming up via the Mackinac Bridge and returning home via Sault Ste Marie thru Canada.

Waterfalls, Picture Rocks, Porcupine mountains, and Copper Harbor. These are all along Lake Superior or close to Lake Superior, not sure if you'll go that far north and east, but Picture Rocks is fairly close.

Thank you, since we'll be there a few weeks, we'll be able to drive around a bit so any specific site recommendations are highly appreciated.

We live up here. My first suggestion is to "bundle up" and put your snow tires on. There could be snow. :) Crossing the Mighty Mac is a thrill. Shoot what you can from the bridge. Check with Michigan Tourism. They have great brochures, Tons of great photo spots when autumn's color is peak, but we are past that now. Lighthouses, rivers and falls, and scenes of the big lakes displaying their power. Next year come in summer or fall. It is "spectacular," any road you take. Peaceful and quiet in Pure Michigan. Canada is fine, too, whether you go home east or west. Lots of Great Lakes' scenery, Niagara Falls (east) etc.

Suggest you take a good pair of snowshoes as well as down jacket, mittens and ear muffs!

Yup, we're preparing for the change in weather, my daughter and her family had gone up to Lac La Belle for a weekend, several weeks ago. Had beautiful weather there, but the day they got back home it was snowing. Snow tires already on the 4wd F150 we'll be going up in (transporting a bunch of her items such as XC skis, her tack gear, etc she'd left with us prior to the move). We have adequate snow gear, still have winter gear items left from our sled dog racing days in the early 70's. No sled though, those are long gone. We just never made it to the UP for any races.

The Locks at Sault Saint Marie are interesting. Maybe no ships at this time of year although. Tahquamenon Falls State Park in state parks in Paradise, MI This is the second largest falls east of the Mississippi. It is quite different from Niagara however. Also near Paradise is lighthouse at White Fish Point. There is a museum there dedicated to the Edmund Fitzgerald, A large ship that sank in Lake Superior and the subject of a Gordon Lightfoot song. Eat Whitefish.

When you cross the bridge, take the first exit to the welcome center. They have tons of maps and info and are very knowledgeable. Make a stop at Munising's welcome center next to the Hardees to get free maps of waterfalls, lighthouses and trails through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Also, go up to Copper Harbor and visit Presque Isle park in Marquette. Bond Falls is easy to drive to, even if there is snow. Check out Porcupine Mt. State Park and Tahquamenon Falls State Park. At Tahquamenon Falls be sure to see the lower falls, I enjoy them better than the bigger upper falls. I enjoy Scott Falls, Laughing Whitefish Falls, and Wagner falls near Munising. There is a place to the side of Laughing Whitefish Falls, that is the spot for a great photo. I have never had gotten good shots from the top or bottom. Lots to do everyday with many photo opportunities, good luck!

I'll second the whitefish comment. Check out the mine at Hancock.

Also the sculpture park at Lakenenland on Hwy 23 just east of Marquette is well worth a visit.

Wonderful place, however I think you will be a bit late to visit here unless you are a hiker or biker. The main office and the autoroute close on October 20th, but you can access a portion of the refuge (Marshland Drive) on foot or bike. ( the autoroute is 8 miles long ). However, another portion of this autoroute called the Fishermans Loop is closed to ALL traffic, regardless of the method for the months of October and November to allow the migrating birds some peace and quiet.

It has been a while for me but I still remember my trip to Porcupine Mt State Park! Many smaller waterfalls and of course the lake shore. Opportunities all across the UP and great people. Wish i were there too!!!
