Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful and helpful replies. I will have to try the "24 rubber band" thing and see what my needs are.

I have been actively attempting to improve my photography for the last couple of years. I mainly photograph landscapes with some flowers and grandkids thrown in. This, of course, has resulted in several GAS attacks. I now have a Sony a7riii body with a Sony 24 - 70 GM lens and a Sony 100 - 400 GM lens. Now Sony has come out with its highly touted 24mm prime. The question I have is whether this would be a good "walk around, general purpose" addition or is there another lens I should be considering.

Thanks!

Obviously, with a 24mm prime, you will be limited to 24mm. A "walk around" lens implies the ability to shoot whatever catches your eye - at any distance. If you really want the 24mm, get it, but I suspect the 24-70mm would be more useful.

It's early morning and I am still a bit blurry eyed. I first read your question as "Less" purchase advice and I was going to reply with "marry my wife". LOL

I have two lenses I use for all of my landscapes. 85% of the time I use a 16-35 f4 lens on a FF camera. The other times I use a 24-120 f4 lens. I use these two lenses because they both take the same filter sizes. It is nice to only take one filter size out with you.

This may not be helpful but.... Isn't there a way, in Lightroom, to identify and list the focal length used in each photo within a group/collection/folder? From that list, the most frequently used focal length can be determined (presuming all photos are by a single photographer) and, thus justify purchase of the best quality prime lens of that focal length.

The moderate zoom, 24-70mm, should suffice as "a good 'walk around, general purpose' addition."

Put this lens on your camera and use it exclusively for 2 or 3 months, as a test of its general usefulness.

I shoot Nikon and use the 24-70 a lot.
But, I walk around with a 35mm prime.

It’s nice to know that you’re still ABLE to “Walk-Around”. Have not seen you here much, lately. RJM

From my experience the lens you are already using is a superb focal length zoom for a walk around lens. I use a Nikon 24-85 for just about everything except macro photographs. For that I use a Nikon 105mm f2.8 micro lens. I never understand buying a 24mm wide angle when you have a 24-70 zoom lens. If anything maybe purchase a lens such as maybe a 10-24, something in that range.

You have some great lenses for you Sony. I would suggest the 16-36mm to complete your selection. I shoot landscapes and wildlife but no kids. But if you are looking for a general walkaround lens then consider this. I opted for a used a6000 with both kit lenses. I got the used outfit for under $600 which is less than the Zeiss 16-35mm. As you can see their is a substantial size and weight difference between the cameras.

I tend to think of primes as lenses for a specific use, like street, or portrait work. For walk around I would stick to the zoom. The 24mm might be very good for your landscape work but not so much for fast moving kids or 1-1 macro.

YOUr 24-70 GM is a great walk around lens. You mentioned you like flowers too, I would suggest investigating the Sony 90mm f2.8 G macro. This one the sharpest lenses ever produced.

FYI, my general walk around lens is the Sony 24-105 f4 G.
