Actually quite nicely placed and sufficient context. At this size image, appears right on focus.
This is most certainly an elk. In my opinion the image is cropped to advantage. Ifeel you have created a reasonably dynamic line running from the elk's back up to the head. The elk's head in an arresting position as I feel my eye stop when I reach his eye. I believe you have used the rule of thirds to advantage as you have placed the elk on the proper fixation points. I feel the the image is a little on the hot side as the elk's back is slightly burn out. However, this may also be due to the time of day the image was taken. In my opinion the light is unflattering as it appears to be mid day light which is generally to harsh. I feel the tall tuffs of grass, particularly the one on the right behind the elk are distracting. In my opinion the image is not tack sharp.

Treadwl, thanks for taking the time to critique my photo. I agree with about everything you stated. I should have spent more time taking this. In reviewing my photos from Yellowstone this photo included 2 Bucks and I cropped it a lot. I was pleasantly surprised that I found this composition in the greater picture. It appears to me that it is not quite tack sharp, and I plan on concentrating on my focus point in the future.
Thanks again.

so clear
i like it just the way it is
thanks
nice
Redron, Thanks for your comments.
Kudos to you for finding this lovely animal and getting a photo of it. I tried so many times, and they were always SO far away. You've captured a lovely turn of the head that's quite engaging. The downside is that the image is all one colour. That's nice camouflage for the elk, but unfortunately is a tad disinteresting for the viewer of the image. Don't get me wrong. I think it's an amazing image and I'd be SO happy if it were mine. But in a perfect world, more contrast between the grasses and the animal would be nice.
PicLady, I increased the color in the grass, but I don't know how to post it here.

If you go to your original post and hit either "reply" it allows you to attach an additional photo. If you go to my post (for example), you need to hit "quote reply" in order to upload an image. I'd really like to see what you've done. it's such a nice image!
That really does help. There's now obvious definition between the grasses and the animal. Nicely done.
