Yes, I've had 2 of them. I even took the Shovel Head apart and stroked it from 74cid to 92cid. Very fast after that. But none of the other components were beefy enough for the extra power and I kept breaking things. Long rides were very uncomfortable. I was riding it one time and I pulled into a gas station in Gorman CA where the temperature had dropped to 40 degrees and I was freezing my ass off. A guy pulled in on a GL1200A with all the bells and whistles and he looked so warm and comfy with his radio blaring etc. I was very jealous of him. That was when I started to pine after a Goldwing.

I started my path towards the Goldwing from a slightly different direction. It all started in 1980 when I bought my last chain driven motorcycle, a 1980 KZ 650. Rode that bike for 3 years. It was the first bike I had with a fairing. After returning from a trip from PA to FL and back in summer of 1982, I was done with chain and sprockets. To much noise, maintenance and dirty, dirty, dirty. I had a chain lube stripe on the back of my riding jacket. I rode in to the local Kawasaki dealership on the KZ 650 the left on a beautiful black 1982 750 Spectre, with shaft drive. It didn't have a fairing on it but I did order it. Back then it was Kawasaki by Vetter, and a perfect match to the factory paint. A couple months later the fairing went on and in the spring I got the fairing lowers and the saddle bags. I rode that bike for several years then traded it in on it's big brother, the 1100 Spectre, complete with full fairing and rear luggage. A few years later I sold the 1100 and bought a low mileage used Voyager XII, my first true touring bike. I rode that bike for years, all over the country, and I actually still have it. About 12 years ago I bought a nice clean 1998 Honda GL1500 SE, my first Goldwing. That was a really comfortable bike. While it was still worth something on a trade, I traded it in on a new 2013 GL1800. That was a nice bike but kind of boring. It was billed as a sport touring bike but there was really little sport in it. Pretty much all touring. Not that there's anything wrong with that, if you want a strictly touring machine. I wanted something a little more nimble on the byways and back roads but still has a touring pedigree. The 2018 GL1800D comes along, a true sport touring bike, with emphasis on the touring. It may not be as nimble as a BMW 1600 on the back roads but it will give it a run for the money. The BMW, with all its additional horsepower, doesn't come close to the Goldwing on the open road. More sport than touring. I believe I will be happy with this bike for many years.
