Hello! I'm brand new to Ugly Hedgehog, but sure do like what I've seen so far. I'm having difficulty using a remote flash. I'm using a Nikon 7200 and a Neewer TT560 Speedlite. I think I've made all the correct setups on the camera, and the TT560 does flash. However, the photo is dark, no matter how much power I'm using on the speedlite. Somehow the remote flash and the camera are not syncing properly. When I attach the flash to the hotshoe on the camera, it works fine. Any ideas of what I am doing wrong? Thank you.

Wags, welcome to the Hog?
You don’t give much info.
Most flashes need a pretty sophisticated trigger to communicate via ettl or HSS.
Not saying you don’t have that but my Canon only has all settings when I’m using the very expensive Canon Radio trigger with it.
So first make sure the trigger is compatible and that it’s fully paired with all functions.
Does Nikon have all those functions built in? I’d be surprised.
On Mine i can control all flash settings from the trigger.
You might mean pairing and not syncing?
Again welcome and good luck!!!

You did not say how the remote flash is being triggered, the remote flash settings, or the camera settings.
Make sure your shutter speed is 1/200 or slower since the flash is not auto-fp sync (HSS) capable.
Shoot in manual mode or shutter speed mode on the camera. You may be able to use other modes but you have to be sure 'auto fp sync' is off via the menu system if you do. I almost always use manual mode when using off-camera flash, especially for flash units that are non-ttl, and non HSS like the TT560.
If triggering with another flash (either in hotshoe) or popup, make sure the triggering flash is not using TTL.
Or, if you use ttl on the triggering flash make sure that the TT560 is in a slave mode that ignores pre-flash (normally S2).
And again, if triggering with another flash be sure it is not using red-eye reduction.

You do realize that it is a manual flash, don't you? It has a GN of 125. Using the standard formula - fstop = guide number / flash to subject distance, if your distance is 15 ft, your fstop will be 8.3 at ISO 100. Your shutter speed should be anywhere from 1/60 to the max sync speed, which should be 1/250. A slower shutter speed will let more ambient light in, and a faster will rely more on the flash with little ambient light.
What are you using to remotely trigger the flash?

Good response, Rick!
(I archived it in my iPad notes.)
Thanks a ton for your help. Setting on Manual made the difference.
