Yesterday there were many Mallards and among them one duck looking different. What duck is this one?
U. VT has a great ornithology dept … you may want to drop them an e-mail
Mallard would be my guess. Same shape, same head, same feathering. As they say, "Birds of a feather..."
They all start out looking like females. As they age, the males get the male coloring. In between, they look like neither/both. I grew up near the water, and mallards were a common sight.
Might also be a hybrid........

Yes, some of them were quite Daffy weren't they?
Looks like a Black Duck to me.
American Black Ducks look a lot like female Mallards, only darker. I am told they are still common, but haven't seen one in person for many years. They are more shy around humans, though, so it is unlikely I would see one in the parks where I photograph anyway.
Yes indeed. We also have Mottled Ducks here on my pond along with Mallards and of course the hybrids. Very hard to tell with Mallards and their friends.
Concur with the Black Duck crowd
At least 3 of them appear to be Mallards...note the two at the top have the curled feathers near the tail...they also have Mallard-like plumages. The top one looks like an immature male. The second has the iridescent blue/green head and white throat band of a mature male. The fourth one is a Mallard female. As others have pointed out, Mallards tend to crossbreed with other species, and flocks can include some very interesting mixes. I'm just not sure what the second picture is...though it appears to be at least partly Mallard. jak
