This is the replacement Pegasus Bridge, the original was the first bridge captured by the British 6th Airborne Division in the Normandy Landings June 1944, they landed by using Horsa gliders so the Germans were taken completely by surprise. The original Pegasus Bridge built in 1934 is now preserved in the adjacent museum.

I take it the this bridge either raises or swings to allow traffic up and down the river?

It does exactly that, the bridge swings upwards using the curved section at the end, this type of bridge is known as a Bascule Bridge, Tower Bridge in London is an example.

Great pics! Iinteresting they apparently moved a whole bridge to preserve it for history!
