A Red-Tail's Dinner

I happened upon this immature Red-Tailed Hawk trying to make a meal of this snake. I was only about 15' away but because the snake kept fighting to stay alive (wrapping itself around the hawk's feet, etc.) I was able to watch for about 10 minutes until the snake finally stopped fighting and was devoured by the hawk. The poses weren't the best, but I'll take it. Of the approx. 40 photos I snapped, this best showed the hawk and the snake.

Very nice. I have posted a photo here of a heron with a snake wrapped around its face so I know what you mean when you say you watched for 10 minutes to get your shots. Great job.

Somewhere I have a series of photos (negatives?) of a Great Blue Heron that has speared a rodent on its bill. I haven't been able to locate those photos or negatives but will share those when (if) I find them. I remember seeing your picture when you posted it. Thanks for sharing, for viewing, and for commenting.

Awesome shot. You got the Hawks nictating membrane protecting the eye. It takes all kinds of specialized tools to win at mortal combat!! Gary

Mike: Once again I thank you for taking the time to view my photo and comment. Hope you have a great day. I watched a number of people walk by this life-or-death drama without seeing it down in the tall grass, but still, it was definitely visible and so close to the trail.

Gregory:

I appreciate your taking the time to view and comment on my photo. It was a very unique situation. I hope that if I came across something like this again I would capture some more interesting angles and better compositions, but I feel lucky to have the shots I got. Have a great day. By the way, I saw your post earlier today. Thanks for sharing.
