Looking for used AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor
105mm f/2.8G IF-ED
What can I expect to pay for this macro lens
Any help appreciated
I do have a nikon 40mm and want to upgrade ?

Do a search on eBay for a more accurate reflection of price. I would imagine varying grades of condition will be a mitigating factor.

Look on KEH and the B&H used section.
Also look at mpb. I recently bought a used Nikon 70-20mm VR2 from that company. It was posted as being in excellent condition and it was. Not a mark on the glass, body, hood or original box and it came with the instruction manual in perfect condition and even included the original Nikon warranty card. It was also less expensive than at other dealers.
Used inventory constantly changes, so just keep scanning the websites until the lens that you want shows up.

"Looking for used AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED" tuomi1947 since you are considering "previously owned" I assume cost effective is a key issue here...
Since most who seek optics in with "Micro" capabilities are keenly "focused" on high acuity...
With this in mind you might consider the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D Macro Autofocus Lens for Nikon AF-D
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/393446-REG/Tokina_ATXAF100PRON_100mm_f_2_8_AT_X_M100.htmlIt is obviously more cost effective and actually has equal or better acuity... more importantly those who use it believe it has decidedly higher contrast and richer color saturation.
But don't take my word for this... here are DxOMark's Stat's on both... The Tokina is simply sharper...
https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Nikon/AF-S-Nikkor-VR-105mm-f-2.8G-ED-mounted-on-Nikon-D810__963https://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Tokina/Tokina-AT-X-M100-AF-PRO-D-AF-100mm-F28-Nikon-mounted-on-Nikon-D810__963I tested both and purchased the Tokina (new) at a fraction of the Nikkor.
Possibly the greatest factor in the mix (for me) is the weight of the Nikkor.
At 790grams the Nikkor is not in the same league of the Tokina at 540grams.
Yes weight matters... especially at this magnitude of difference...
I'm not alone in my thoughts here... when it comes to worth & value many folks believe the Tokina wins hands down...
btw, I'm not an affiliate of Tokina and I love Nikon's optics... That said this Tokina is one of the very few third party optics that grace my kit... However it you have deep pockets the Nikkor is an excellent optic also... I'm certain if you go with it you'll be pleased...
An important caveat, if you buy used especially on eBay etc. there is a potential of purchasing a "Gray Market" lens which Nikon USA will not service, not a good thing... The Tokina comes with a 3-year warranty... enough said.
Hope this helps tuomi1947 or is at least food for thought.
I wish you well on your journey...

I have a little old Nikon 35-135 that does macro (Nikon calls it Micro) and does a fine job. Its older, screw drive 5 pin with aperture ring, it is metal so a little heavy. Looks brand new, got it for $33.00 delivered off ebay. A really good inexpensive lens.
