My, My, What Big Eyes You Have.

At least some of these images have probably been posted before, I am going through an external drive and when I come across some winners I can't help but reprocess them again, another reason why it is good to shoot RAW.

Anyway this is an Ant Mimic Jumping Spider, the first image was shot with a macro lens at full 1:1 macro, for anyone who has experience with macro lenses this will give you some indication about how tiny this spider is as that is an actual macro shot of this bug. If you were to see it on your patio you would probably mistake it for an ant just as I at first did when I saw it. The other 4 shots were taken with a reversed lens set up on extension tubes. All of these images except the first one have been cropped and also downsized for posting to the web. One thing about downsizing images, if you did not already know this it does help reduce noise in your image. These images really have to be downloaded to be fully appreciated.

Images were taken with a Canon 5DS (Which actually I am selling and it has fewer than 1200 actuations) with an old 28mm Vivitar f/2.5 Closeup lens reverse mounted to a full set of M42 extension tubes. Camera settings were ISO 400, 125th Second, f/11, manual flash set at either 1/8th or 16th power.

These are awesome. I would like to start digging into doing more macro shots but not sure where to start. I am sure there is more info here on UHH, I just have not dug hard enough. Your description is likely fully detailed, but I scratched my head about the "reverse mounted" part. I will also have to look into what M42 extension tubes are/do for this too. Could be a fun new adventure, thanks!

Extension tubes are simply rings that space your lens away from the camera body that enable your camera to focus much closer than it can without them, they also cause your camera to lose the ability to focus on subjects that are not close to the camera so you only want to use them when doing closeup or macro type work. Reversing a lens is simply mounting a lens backwards onto your camera, if you consider what a wide angle lens, what it does is take a wide scene in front of your camera and reduces it down to the size of your sensor, so when you turn a wide angle lens around it does the exact opposite, it takes a small area and projects it into a large image. M42 lenses simply refer to the old Pentax M42 mounting system, I have a lot of old lenses and various items around and find that when shooting with those old lenses mounted backwards that my M42 tubes are just fine, I also have newer electronic tubes but don't see the need to mount them when doing reversed because there is no electronic connection in my reversed lenses.

Anyway, the folks over at the macro section here at this site can coach you along and they also have a lot of resources at the splash page of the forum. Personally I had been shooting macro for a bit over a year when I came across an article that I am going to link which aided me greatly in taking my macro to the next level along with the coaching and learning I received while contributing to the Macro forum here. This article has also been linked at the beginning of the macro forum as well, but it is an excellent learning tool for anyone wanting to get serious about macro.
