This was easily the largest Fox Squirrel I have ever seen.
Fox Squirrel (Sciurus niger)
W. Kentucky, USA - 9/21/2018
1/100 sec - f/8.0 - ISO 250
Interesting Tidbit: Fox squirrel possesses flexible joints of ankles which help
them to turn their feet at 180 degrees. This characteristic helps them while
moving down from large trees. Fox squirrels have the largest number of
population among all other tree squirrel species residing in North America.

big and beautiful fox squirrel, mike, and a great shot!
Are they named fox squirrels because of their tail’s resemblance to a foxes tail? Their coloring favors a red fox’s coloring too.

Here's a shot that really shows the coloring and length of the tail. It's not a great photo as I just took a quick shot across my pasture one evening.

I have no definite proof, but I would think they are named Fox Squirrels because of their red/orange coloring that resembles a Red Fox.
