My Nikon P1000 Experience

As I previously posted, I had an excellent experience with B&H, one of many throughout the years. They delivered the camera within a day after they received a shipment. I was anxious to get the unit because of its reach. I read that it was heavy, but I was more concerned with the reach. I got the camera, put it through its paces and was very impressed with the image quality. What I wasn't impressed with was the weight. I have been a Canon shooter for decades and decided when I hit 73 that I was tired of carrying all the gear. So, I bought a Sony RX10 IV. IMHO the Sony is exceptional. I do a lot of hockey and stage play shooting and the 1" sensor and 2.8 lens lends itself to excellent low light photography and of course, the weight is perfect and no lenses. So, I kicked myself in the can and returned the P1000 to B&H the morning following delivery. I went on a search for another low light camera because in my mind I need a backup. The fact that I love shopping for camera has nothing at all to do with the additional purchase. I settled on a Panasonic DMC-ZS2500. It has a 1" sensor and a 2.8 lens. Does not have the reach, in fact it doesn't have the reach of the Sony RX10 IV, which is 600mm. I think the Panasonic's reach is 450mm. I got to thinking of exactly how often I need a big reach, my answer is none. I don't do BIF or any wildlife, except 9 year old hockey players. So, I will use the crop function in Picasa (don't laugh). So, I should receive the Panasonic today and we'll see how it goes. Hockey starts tomorrow, so I will test it and send images. Thanks for listening to an old man who can't seem to make up his mind. Have a great day!

I have the FZ 1000 and it does an excellent job as a backup camera for me. I use it mostly for 4K video and grab a frame when there is something interesting in the shot.

Interesting. For those looking toward the P900 / P1000 realm, "weight aside" is the camera worth the price tag? Just curious on my end.

Sadly I was unable to test the 2000mm reach. At 73 I shake too bad and I wasn't ready to carry around a tripod everywhere I went. Years ago I had a p900 and the IQ was excellent.

Understood. The longest zoom (P&S) I have is 50x, and that can be difficult "sometimes". I have not had a chance to shoot with one of the "reach monsters", will have to try one out. These superzooms are not the answer to everything, but there is something fun about zooming from wide to way out there, as long as one can get a good pic. Once I discovered that my Sony DSLR cams have an "optical zoom" feature (not digital zoom, I disable that), I have turned some of my old telephoto lenses into zoom monsters in their own right!

Hey MikeMck!, keep on keepin on and enjoy the ride!

I've been all over the place lately. I considered upgrading from an A6000 to an A6500. I've got a D610, a D5500, a Coolpix A900 and an SX50. All as a result since subscribing to this website. No regrets. I'm thinking of liquidating most of this stuff and going with either an FZ2500 or an RX 10 IV. So, I'd be really anxious to hear what you have to say about the two. I like Panasonics ( I've had a couple ) and I know Sony's are great, so I'm a little uncertain. Price is not a determining factor, so I'd just like to hear what your opinion is. I'll be watching. Thanks.

I was a Canon shooter for decades. I am 73 and came to the realization that I didn't want to carry all that gear around. I put all my stuff on either Craigs List or here and over the course of a year, I was able to sell it all. I took the proceeds and purchased a Sony RZ10 IV. I love it. I spend most of my time shooting stage plays (daughter directs, grandson acts) and ice hockey (grandson 9). It is outstanding in low light and better outside. As a backup I thought I would try the Nikon P1000 then the DMC-FZ2500. Neither one worked for me. So, I am looking at a Sony RX10 iii as a backup (used). Good luck.

The Canon SX70hs is about the same size and weight as the SX50, but with a 65x zoom. If you really like something very light, might be one to consider!
