if you are shooting in RAW (NEF)... DOWNLOAD to and external drive then into lightroom or photoshop
I shoot RAW and then convert to TIFF. It is my decision not to use jpeg files. They lose to much information for my taste.
If your just starting out and are just having fun, I would suggest jpeg mode in the best resolution mode. I.E. jpeg fine, or large.
I also only shoot in raw , then open the image and save as a tiff file .then i always have my raw files untouched and ready for more applications

I agree with everything you said, and I always have my camera with me. When you open the Raw where do you store to create a Tiff? are you mac or pc
Save as a tiff, and send it to a specific folder on an external hard drive.
Specific folder means, style, project, etc. I tend to work in project mode so each project has a name , that folder contains all the orginal files. Then I make a copy of the file I want to work on and save that to a subfolder call workfiles under the project name.
I don't know if this is what you mean.
Or, after make the adjustments in Raw save as a tiff file and open where ever you wish.

I'm thinking you want to know how to save a RAW as a TIFF. First, save it's RAW version. Then "Save As" again. When you "Save As" instead of "Save" you will get a box that allows you to change the file format. The format line is below the line where you type in a file name. That drop down menu gives you a bundle of choices, many of which are extinct, some are not very popular, and other ones are quite usable. TIFF will be one of those choices.
