I just purchased my first digital camera, a Canon PowerShot SX60 HS. I did something this morning, that I don't know how to fix. I can see out the viewfinder (real time) to be able to take a picture. When I try using the LCD screen, all I see ts the last picture that was taken (I am using the playback button). What am I doing wrong? I want to be able to use the LCD screen instead of the viewfinder. PLEASE HELP ME.

I don’t have a Canon, but most have a button near the viewfinder that lets you choose between LCD monitor only, EVF Only, or both. It could also be an item in your menu. Hope this helps. No doubt you will also hear from Canon users.

I tried that, but it keeps switching between the viewfinder (real time) and the LCD screen (the last picture that was taken). I want to see a live real-time view on the LCD screen.

When this happens to me, it is usually right after I look at something in playback mode. I just push the shutter button halfway to get out of playback mode. Try that.

Nope, when I try that it goes back into the viewfinder mode.

Try reading the manual carefully.
You may have pressed a button which allocates a particular function.
If you have just bought the camera try resetting the camera to factory settingsfrom the menu, this should solve your problems.
Take time learning to use.
Frustrating at times but this is new to you.

My wife has an SX-60. She never uses the viewfinder, and it drives me crazy! I showed her a trick that may be useful for you. Open the viewfinder, rotate it, and flip it on the back of the camera. The screen nestles in the back of the camera and the viewfinder is disabled. Hope that it helps!

Also, look at page 4, item 19 in the manual. If you hit that part of control ring, it toggles between viewfinder and screen....

This youtube goes over all the settings of the SX60, it's pretty long.

This may sound obvious but if you are in the "playback" mode, did you try and depress the corresponding button (number 11 below) to exit the mode?
Another poster suggested slightly depressing the shutter button, that also works to exit you.

The DISP will toggle to VF or LCD.

On the SX50, when you swing the LCD screen out for viewing, the EVF is turned off and you should get a live view on the LCD. If you press the Playback button you are entering review mode and will see the last photo you took. To exit Playback mode, press the Playback button and the LCD will return to Live view. Close the LCD to use the EVF again. That’s the way my SX50 works.

I also own an SX-60, and noticed that the responses are discussing two different features. Since you are seeing the last picture taken in the monitor, you have gotten into Playback Mode (button 11 on the diagram in the manual, reprinted above by 47grayfox), but you should also be seeing that in the viewfinder. If that is the case, simply press the Playback button again or press the shutter release part-way down. If you are seeing a live shot through the viewfinder while the monitor is in playback mode, or if neither of those actions releases the playback mode, your camera may be malfunctioning and you should try resetting it to factory default settings.
There are two ways to switch between monitor and viewfinder viewing: Open the articulated monitor show that the monitor side shows to activate it and deactivate the viewfinder, or press the "down" button (#19). The latter takes two presses of the button to move from one to the other since it also activates or deactivates the information shown on the screen.
Also note that the display must be set to the monitor for opening and closing it to redirect the image; if you have used the Down button (#19) to send the image to the eyepiece, opening the monitor will not move the image to it.
Since you said this is your first digital camera, I'll add a few other thoughts about the camera after using it for two trips and some nearby shooting. The SX60 is a good all-around camera for casual photographers who want the option of a long zoom (but steady the camera with a tripod or monopod, or by resting it on or leaning it against a stable surface, for long-zoom shots). My major complaint with it is that it can have trouble capturing focus, so it's important to learn to fix the focus by pressing the shutter release half-way down, then moving the camera to adjust the composition before pressing the rest of the way--this can be a little tricky since the shutter release seems to be rather sensitive.
Beyond that, the best thing is to remember that it costs nothing but your time to take digital shots, so go out and shoot a lot, and experiment with burst mode, even when taking candid and casual portrait shots. But mostly, have fun!

Once it goes back into viewfinder mode press the DISP button on the back of the camera repeatedly (and slowly) until the LCD is turned on. The DISP button is what toggles between the two but not when in playback mode. In playback mode it changes the format of the playback screen. So if this happens again press the shutter button halfway down to get out of playback mode then use the DISP button to switch from VF to LCD and back.

This image is a copy of the sx60 manual page describing the viewfinder and screen operation. Hope this helps.
