Lightroom CC and DNG file question

Does anyone who uses Lightroom CC know if you can import RAW pictures into Lightroom without Lightroom converting the RAW files to DNG? I don't use Lightroom CC myself but I am trying to find out for a friend. She has a Nikon D810 and wants to import her NEF files into Lightroom, but wants them to remain NEF rather than being converted to DNG on import. If there is a setting to control it, where is it located?

Yes, of course she can use native NEF files. There is a default to do that at the top of the import screen. But, at her choice, she can change it to both NEF and DNG, DNG only or NEF only.

She does have to have a version current enough for the D810.

There is absolutely no requirement to convert native raw files to DNG. I never did.

Lightroom doesn't "convert", but will make a copy as a dng file if you tell it too. Original raw files are always left in their "feral" state. On import, there are 4 options - Copy, Add, Move and Copy as DNG. Just don't select Copy as DNG and things will be fine.

She is a subscriber and keeps her Lightroom & Photoshop up to date. Thank you for the help, I will pass it on to her today.

When she imports her NEF files from her card, does it being a copy onto her computer or straight to the cloud? She wanted to get a NEF copy of a couple wedding shots she took but I have no idea if a copy of the originals were put into a folder on her MAC or not. I could find them either. In the Preferences for Lightroom CC is there a place where it will show the default location used for imports? She is not using the Classic version she is using the new cloud based version. Do you know if the new cloud based version does all of its imports straight to the cloud, and if that is the case would the NEF files be in the could along with the DNG copies. After the import the original NEF files aren't on her card any longer so I asume a setting in Lightroom deleted them from the card after importing.

Thank you. I have used Lightroom but not the new cloud based version. I never used Lightroom for transferring files from my cards to my computer. I normally just created a folder and copied them into it and then used the Library Import to import the ones I wanted to work on.

When she imports her NEF files from her card, does... (show quote)

I don't have a copy of LR CC, but it is my understanding that LRCC uses the Cloud as primary storage, and in Preferences you can designate a "Storage Location for Originals" on your local drive.

A slight shift. I am not a professional and I have no priority interest in my pictures, is there any down side to using the Cloud as one of my four backup locations?
