When we were in Venice we took a long walk in the residential neighborhoods away from the main walkway. Many photographic opportunities were found in these neighborhoods and were authentic representing the manner in which real Venetians live. This venture did not cost us anything and was a special day and photographic wonderland.

My family for generations are from Venice. I hope you will actually stay overnight in the city itself. The best time to be there and to photograph is early morning before the mass of tourists arrive and evening when the tourists staying in hotels in nearby cities have left. That’s when you experience the real city. And of course the best light...

Looking for suggestions for a day trip from Venice next month. Would prefer travel by train or coach, but rental car not out of the question. Padua, Vicenza or Verona are probably the most obvious choices, but I really don't know much about them. Burano is already a seperate day on the schedule.

My main interest is photo ops, but I'm the only photographer in our group of four.

Recommendations and suggestion for what to see there appreciated.

Go to Padua and see the Scrovegni Chapel--full of magnificent Giotto works. Advance reservations are required. Have a great trip!

Repleo,

My wife and I were in Venice, Florence and Rome last October. As long as you are careful, observant and cautious, there is no need to worry about being pick-pocketed or having someone cut your camera strap. Could it happen? Sure. Does it happen? Sure. But the likelihood of it occurring is quite small if you are on your guard and being cautious, etc. We had no problems in any of those three cities. So, your optimism in humanity is not ill-placed.

With regard to side trips, there are many picturesque wineries that can be found. I also underscore the possible side trip to Verona, not only the 'supposed' balcony of Juliet, but also where the opera 'Aida' is performed at the open-air colosseum with 600 performers including ballet dancers, singers, soloists and supernumeraries on stage, plus a full orchestra and chorus. That is a stunning thing to see and remember. This is not the venue which has elephants, camels, giraffes on stage, during the performance of 'Aida'. That used to be performed at the Roman Baths at Caracalla.

The other side trip already mentioned is that of Padova (Padua). It too is very historic and has a beautiful round fountain in the center of town.

Enjoy,

Arca

Believe it or not, if one starts early, Rome can be done as a day trip from Venice. If one doesn't have some idea what to do in Rome, they are not very well read or the walking dead. We started at the Coliseum and circled around to the Pantheon and finally to the Spanish Steps stopping at many other famous stops and sites along the way. We did run out of time and did not make the little country of the Vatican (yes, it is its own city-state). Well worth considering and you get to see spectacular scenery along the way.

Think about Ferrara

I've been to Ferrara many times and never get tired of being there. The Castello Estense and it's moat is in the middle of town and just across from the Cathedral. Then there are some medieval streets, the walls, the Palazzo dei Diamonti...... Mantova or Mantua is also worth a look. I have only seen it at night in the fog and it was fascinating. Bologna is also a nice day trip from Venice.

Not worth trying to 'do' Rome in a day especially given 9 hours travel time by Freccia trains. It needs loads of time to get to understand as well as visit. Spanish Steps are completely underwhelming and not worth the time given the many, many other sites in easy distance.

I know that Rome can be done in a day by train because my wife and I did it. And we were not rushed at all to see the sites. The two trains coming and going were very fast and there was not a long wait between them. We walked everywhere in Rome with just a general itinerary. It was because we did not push ourselves we never made it to the Vatican. A was a lot of fun day trip.

Just wanted to follow up and let you all know we are just back from a great trip to Venice - after a full week in Sicily. Thanks for all of the great suggestions. We did make the trip to Padua (Padova) and had a great day. St Anthony's Basilica was outstanding - very peaceful and spiritually awakening experience. We also went to the Scrovegni Chapel with its incredible Giotto interior and the adjacent archeological museum. The medieval markets were a great photo op. Padua was an easy 40 min train ride from Venice and Padua has a great tram system linking all of the sights.

And yes, we did stop at Torcello on the way back from Burano. Apparently the secret is out. Torcello was mobbed - even in the late afternoon. No longer bucolic.

I'll be posting some pictures soon.
