Software and device seen on a cruise

Just recently returned from a cruise where the staff photogs were busy taking pictures of everyone (as is their job). They had mounted on their camera what appeared to be a cell phone which was attached to the camera and they would enter info (such as cabin number) into it which probably was entered as metadata. It would also display the taken photo on the cell phone screen. I was intrigued by this and wondered if anyone knows what the software is?

Don't know if this would do all you are asking about but look at this article - https://www.cnet.com/how-to/control-a-dslr-camera-with-your-android-phone-or-tablet/

The program they talk about gives you the ability to do anything (allegedly ;-) your camera can do. Many camera's today will allow you to enter names for a photo (or, as you said, suite #, etc.) so if the camera can do it, they say the app will allow you to do the same with your phone.

Or maybe they were using the phone like a monitor...

If you had asked them I think they probably would have been glad to show you all about it.

To be fair, I didn't chat with the photogs about this particular feature, but a previous conversation with them indicted a lack photo knowledge..i.e. selling a monopod in their store...When asked if a tilt head was available with it, I was told that it wasn't needed.. Asked the guy exactly how I would take a vertical? He just scratched his head and commented that he never thought of that... And, yes. he was one of the ship photogs.

Thank you Bob, we usually go on Princess and they didn't have that device as of the middle of May this year.

Something like this?

As the link by SkiExtreme illustrates, you can use qDSLR Dashboard or any other software capable of remote control (wired or wireless) and of writing metadata - which qDSLR can do - in a tag called Image Comments.

The bracket and hot shoe adapter are available from B&H.

And it actually does what the OP is looking to do.
