Hello,

I'm currently looking to upgrade my iPhone 6 Plus. I love photography and use my camera on my iPhone a great deal. On a recent group trip to Israel I brought my Cannon, with various lenses, and my iPhone. Travelling in a group environment, and being constantly on the go, I realized it was just so much easier to pull out my iPhone to take photographs.

I'm curious to find out your professional opinion on camera/picture quality on the iPhone 8 Plus versus spending the additional hundreds of dollars and investing in an iPhone X. I understand the screen pixel quality is superior on a X ... I'm not certain about the quality of actual photograph using the two different iPhone models. I would be grateful to hear back from folks who have experience using both and/or either iPhone.

I have the iPhone 8 Plus. I downloaded the ProCamera app with lots options and it works great, for an iphone. I find I am using it more and more for the exact same purposes you describe. It's convenient. Unless I plan on selling prints or images it's a fine instrument for what it is; taking snapshots. It is not a professional tool. Then again, I am not a professional photographer.

I have found the iPhone very handy and it is always with you. I have heard it said the best camera is the one with you when you want to take a picture. I have a iPhone X and get very good images. My carry around camera is a Nikon D-850 and at this point I use it for planned photography, its to much to carry around with you all of the time. The iPhone is always there.

Go to Apple.com and watch yesterday’s keynote speech — at least the portions dealing with the new iPhone Xr, Xs, and Xs Max.

The new cameras in the top tier phones work with the A12 processor and iOS 12 to do some amazing things.

Last year’s iPhone X has been discontinued.

I disagree when you say it's not a professional tool. It very much is, depending on your requirements, and limitations and practicalities of using a larger camera. Besides, have you seen these smartphones film underwater? Absolutely spectacular.

Hi Donna;

I assume you are comparing the specifications and image quality of the rear cameras. The cameras are similar but the iPhone X has a slightly faster lens in the telephoto lens i.e. f2.4 versus f2.8 in the iPhone8+. Furthermore, both lenses in the iPhone X have optical image stabilization while the iPhone 8+ has optical stabilization in the wide angle lens only. Only you can assess if the two improved features incorporated in the iPhone X camera are of value to you and therefore worth the extra cost. However, the screens of the two phone are completely different with the iPhone X having the newer technology OLED display (rumoured to be manufactured by Samsung) while the iPhone 8+ has the older IPS LCD screen. You would have to view each to determine which is better in your opinion. There are other operating functions that have changed with the iPhone X model so I suggest you visit an Apple store or other retailer that carries the Apple line of phones to make your comparison before placing an order. With the new iPhone 10XS, 10XS Max and 10XR models about to be released in the next several weeks, you may wish to wait as there are bound to be some good price discounts on the exisiting 8+ and iPhone 10 models.

The new ones are rated IP 68, which is 30 minutes at 1.5 meters depth, NO housing.

Garth, I am interested in the XS because Apple says that it has a 10X optical zoom. I travel a lot and use a Panasonic with a 30 power zoom, which is great in the jungle, but I did think that 10x would be more than enough for my more recent travel. But, I do wonder if it is truly 10x optical. Can you confirm this?
