but the young lady was too cute to be scary so I had to do quite a bit of editing

I once had a similar issue shooting a young woman who wanted to do something "dark" but couldn't portray dark.
The first two appear to be out of focus and she looks more bored than scary.
The final image is indeed creepy; she is partially hidden and making good eye contact--The eye contact is what makes the image.
My youngest daughter is very good at creepy images. It should be mentioned that she wasn't actually holding a knife. I got that image from the internet and composited it in.
