Need an OPINION between the Nikon D7200 and the Nikon D7500. I have accumulated all kinds of specs and on line threads with regards to their similarities and slight differences. I have read 100s os testimonies to why one should own and love the D7200. Rather then rent each one and road testing each, I was hoping to find a hogger who actually owned both. Or perhaps someone that has a lot of experience with each camera in the field. I can only afford one. What should it be. Thanks in advance

Hmmmmm....... That's gonna be a tough choice. I'm a D7200 shooter but never owned a D7500. One card slot rules it out for me. I know, but that's just me.

I have the 7100 and the 7200, love then both...I feel the 7200 does take a slightly better shot. Also, I like the two card slots so I can back up just in-case.

Give some context. What body do you have now that a D7xxx series is being considered against?

I dumped my D7000 after a few months because I hated the randomly placed unlighted buttons and unreadable green screen operational method. The Info screen was inactive for control. I believe that clumsy interface persists through the D7200.

I also hated the lack of an articulated screen compared to my D5xxxs.

The D7500 fixes the first complaint with an active touchscreen. You use the big readable LCD for control.

It partially fixes the second complaint with a tilt screen.

Better but still not up to my D5600 and still costs and weighs twice as much. While taking same images.

If price is a factor consider Nikon refurbs. All mine have come in new condition with low shutter activation (10 on my D5600). You can get refurb 7200. Unlikely 7500 yet.

Have owned a D7200 for a while now and really, really like it. Mostly use it for landscapes and wildlife, especially birding for which DX is a 1.5x advantage, but found its great for portraits and events. Was looking for a backup body and looked hard at the D7500 and eventually rejected it. I am a big believer in DxOMark camera sensor reviews. The D7200 is rated at 87, the D7500 is rated at 86, the D500 is rated at 84. The D7500 has one mem card slot where the D7200 has 2 and the D7500 is 20.9mp with the D7200 at 24.2mp. So, after all the research I did, I was going to pick up a 2nd D7200 until I fell into a used pristine D500 at 18,901 actuations for a great price at my local camera store here in Houston. My recommendation is the D7200 and you find great deals at this time on both used and new bodies. The only negative is the rear view screen is fixed, not moveable.

I bought a D7200 in 2015 from 42nd Street (honest, I didn't know any better at the time!!) and later found out that it was grey market. It was my first DSLR and served well to learn on and I was quite happy with the images it produced. However, it started doing a few funky things here and there and I knew if something really went wrong it would be difficult to have repaired. So, last fall I upgraded to the D7500. Since the 7200 was similar in design it wasn't a difficult transition and it's a relief to not have a grey market product. The fact that it only has one card slot is no big deal as I'm not a professional. The 7500 does a good job in low light situations and I'm pleased with the overall image quality. I do almost no shooting in live view but the touch screen is handy. I think I'll be using this cameral for quite a while to come.

Don’t have any other camera to compare it against. I did a lot of research, on the 5xxx series and 7xxx series. These are in my dollar zones. I will be shooting, kids, sports, birds in flight and other wildlife. I value opinions of Hoggers, and was hoping to find opinions and experiences from those that have used both the D7200 and D7500, so they may give an accurate account as why they prefer one over the other. Believe me I am loaded down with specs, bells, whistles, articulating screens, card slots, and tons of info. Many thanks for all the articles on such. Can not afford the D500 and higher price ranges. My intention was to purchase new or refurbed, 7200 or 7500. Was hoping to hear from those that may have owned both. Thanks

Thanks for the additional details. When you mention BIF and sports, you get more frames per second on the D7500, but you give up 4MP in resolution vs the D7200. That said, I'd go with the advancements in the D7500 over the D7200 unless the cost difference is an important factor higher than capability. They're both very capable so it wouldn't be like you're paying less, but getting less. For the older camera, you can pay less and get essentially the same camera.

There is not a great deal of difference in the cameras but the D7200 has two card slots. Why not invest in better FX lens and work on your skill set.

I looked at the D7500 and ended up buying a D7200. The guy at Adorama convinced me that since I don't shoot a lot of video that the difference between the two probably wouldn't be worth the money. Now that I am working with the D7200 I agree. I am very happy with the images I am getting out of the D7200 and don't think I am missing a thing.
As far as the double card slot, I love it since I usually shoot RAW I now shoot RAW + JPG using slot 2 for the JPG.

You can get 8fps on the Nikon D7500. And it also has a superior processor. It does not have dual SD card slots as the D7200. To many, that is a requirement. Not especially for me. Pros love the dual SD card slots. Most photographers can get by with a single SD card slot. Just because the D7200 has dual SD slots, does not necessarily make it a better camera than the D7500.
