Touch-Screen vs. Flip-Out Screen .... which?

Is a Touch-Screen conducive to making better pictures of buildings, or - for shooting stars, or are you better off with a flip-out screen (a la Canon) ... which of these two highly desirable features, would be more advantageous, in such shooting situations, as I have just described?

And, yes - you can have BOTH in some cameras, but, if you HAD to choose one or the other, which would prove to be a better aid - in the long run???

It doesn't make a difference in the quality of the photo. The one advantage of the flip out screen is you can view the screen when the camera is not at eye level in front of you such as on a tripod which is lower so you get the correct composition. My camera has neither touch or flip out, my wives has a flip out screen which when she first got the camera she used a lot but now usually uses the viewfinder.

Personally, Touch screen does nothing at all for me, except maybe for encouraging bad choices from inadvertent touching of the screen with my nose!

I see some value in the flippy displays - I can't always get the viewfinder angle I want, and this would help.

Please understand that this is from a wish list perspective, as I have neither on my Nikon DX bodies at the moment.

No, you're right ... it doesn't make a difference to the final product, Lewis ... but, they both make a difference in ease of use ...

And, of course - when you Review ... sometimes, it's easier to see, with the flip-out screen, pulled out ...

And, of course - with a Touch Screen ... you can pinpoint your subject better, AND shoot from the screen!

They both have unique advantages, Lewis ... have you used your wife's camera?

I don't remember how far it goes back, Andy ... but I think most of the D5000 series have flip-out screens ...

Of course, Nikon added Touch, to the D5500, and kept it later, in the D5600 ....

It also was added to the D7500 (although, that one's only a tilt screen) and the PRO D500 ....

Speaking of Pro ... not sure, but I think both the new D850 and the D5 - also have touch ... don't know about the rest ....

But none of THOSE - of course - have the flip-out screen ...

Canon's new FF 6D Mk. II, though - has both features, as do the EOS 80D, 77D, 70D ... and the Rebel "I" series from the 7i down to the 4i ....

I'd love to have both, if possible (have them both in my D5500, and in my T4i) but now, I'm looking at other models, and I have to choose one or t'other!!!

It's a toss-up!!! ... Looking for a little help, here ...

Anything that helps frame the scene is a real bonus.
A touch screen is nice but not as good as a flip out screen.

Okay, then, Richard ... chalk one up for Fully Articulating ... and an Honorable Mention for Touch, I guess ...

Or, Touchie-Flip, Robyn ... of course it is!!!!

But, as indicated in the lead post - if you HAD to pick ONE OR THE OTHER - which would be most important to you?

I chose vari-angle touch screen like the screen on my G1X III and my 80D. The screen on my 5D IV is a touch screen but unfortunately it is also fixed. Would be nice if it were a flippy screen but I manage without. As for important, neither are important to me; they are what they are. There have been times when the articulated screen has come in handy but it's not the be all end all, just a convenience. Getting use to the touch screen is an entirely different matter but it has its definite advantages. As I have cameras with both, I will choose the one that will best get the job done.

I chose vari-angle touch screen like the screen on... (show quote)

Lucky you, Robyn ....

I just have two which are both Touch, and flip-out ... the D5500, and the T4i ... also have a 60D, which flips, and a D5300 - which does, too - but no Touch!!!

But, I'm considering a K-70 - which is just flip-out, and also a D7500 - which just has Touch (but, it tilts, too!)

Choices, choices ... eh?

There is always another way of doing what you can do with a touch screen, but there are times when a flip out (articulated) screen can't be beaten, for example, shooting near ground level, or above eye level.

While I mostly use a viewfinder, I really like flip out screens. Makes it easier to shoot over your head in crowds, or down low close to the ground. Also to take candid shots without having the camera to your eye, getting natural rather than posed or "frozen" shots. And for the occasional selfies.

I'm old, so have never figured out touch screens. But a fully articulated screen is a must for my primary camera.
