2K vs 4K screen shots.

I was interested to see if 4K video frame from a B700 Coolpix was sharper than 2K video frame from my D7000 and Sigma 15-30mm zoom lens. So I shot a quick test clip with both cameras set to the same iso, shutter speed, and focal length, using the same lighting.

The subject was my CD / video shelf at a distance of about 8 ft. I cropped each screen shot of a single video frame to about 25% of the frame and viewed the crops side by side on my 11x17 1680x1050 resolution led monitor. I color corrected the 4K video frame to match the 2K video colors.

I reasoned if the individual frames were sharper, the whole video should be sharper as well, even if viewed in HD rather than on a 4K monitor (which I don't have). A 2k frame is roughly 1/4 the resolution of a 4K frame (1920x1080 vs 3840x2160).

The 2K frame is on the left and the 4K frame is on the right. Click on the download button to see it full screen.

I should note that the situation was reversed when taking still pics of the same subject. For still photogaraphy the D7000 was sharper than the B700, about the same amount as the B700 was sharper thaan the D7000 on a video frame. So I guess the B700 makes a better video camera, though for stills at the same focal length the D7000 is a better still camera. Considering the B700 was about half the price of the D7000 and lens, 4K technology delivered a noticeable advance for amateur videos, comparable to the advance from SD to HD.

Because of incredible shutter lag issues (over a second...) from my drone (Typhoon H Pro), I usually shoot 4K video and use VLC to extract stills from the video file. I get great results from that, and a choice of 60 photos per second to choose from!

In the not too distant future, people may not take stills at all, just shoot a few seconds of video and select the best frames. 6K video frames are 19MP, (6144x3072).

Last night I was watching a taped TV show and had paused the show during a commercial in order to fast forward through the commercials when I saw this amazing paused video frame on my TV, of a firefighter fighting the fires in California, so I took a pic of my TV screen. I thought that the chances of a still photographer getting this shot were pretty slim.

Interesting. Were you surprised that the difference wasn’t more dramatic?

No, because the two screenshots are not on a 4K monitor. But the difference was noticeable on the single frames and the videos. When I did the test I wasn't sure which way it would go. I hadn't Known if my buying the Coolpix B700 for the 4K video had been worth it until I did the test.
