The second picture works very well. The background is not distracting and color is vibrant in the butterfly.

I am new here. Really love taking butterfly pictures and trying to play with different techniques and angles. I have been playing with the different effects of lighting. How does this look to the experts? I never know when it is too much, or what the best lighting is to shoot in.

Great job capturing your butterfly, and the shallow DOF. I personally would have liked to see your subject a little brighter to show off the details against the dark background.
And just so you know I definitely am not one of the pros here, just know what I like.

I like the middle photo, great color on the butterfly and the pentax flowers. The other photos are good but for me it is the color in the butterfly and the flowers that make the photo. So the bland colors just don't pop for me

I agree, that shadow along the top dulled it a bit. On this one the lighting really seemed to be at a better angle to highlight the wings. Gotta keep playing with it.

Viceroy, the second one, the black butterfly, is very good, I particularly like the color in the shallow depth of field.

I like the angle on the swallowtail.
