Well, fine then, if you want a Canon then go buy a a Canon! If you have your mind made up already, why are you asking for suggestions?

Ched ... I've not made up my mind, already. All I DO wish to do, is keep it at $600, or below. I'm not partial to ANY brand. I use all four, who make DSLRs.

This is for a friend. I was just wondering which you all thought, was the better deal, pricewise, and feature-wise ....

Renting and trying before buying is a great way, for me in 2011 it was my wife taking a photography class and the community college checking out various digital cameras, had a different one each weekend, Re-caught the bug on a Nikon D40, took many great shots, then bought one on eBay cheap, this from last camera of Minolta XD11 (loved that camera).

DTran ... the D3000 series, has always been available in red, as has the D5000 series, UNTIL the release of the D5600, which only comes in black.

Canon only released the EOS Rebel T3 and T5/T6 in red. The newer T7 - has not yet been released in red. Such a shame!!!!

Pentax has also dropped making colored cameras. The K-50 and previous K-30 - were available in about 40 colors, as Special Order Items.

The Pentax K-S1 ... was also available in a series of colors, along with different textures, as well. The K-S2 had different-colored base plates.

The current Pentax K-70, and the K-3 - are / were (in the case of the latter) only available in the silver option, as is the new KP ... and the K-1 / K-1 II.

The Nikon Df is also available in silver. Sony is the ONLY company who has never offered any color options, in their SLTs, but do, in compact models.

Probably is, Pete ... but, by the time you've rented all the current beginner DSLR models out there, you could've bought one!!!!

The best is the one that makes cameras the user is most comfortable with. They should check the feel, check the menus to see which is most intuitive. Checking at a store is good, renting to decide is better.

But that's a special rental service only available at a Community College, Pete, and only - to students, as well, probably ...

Commercial Renters are not anywhere near - THAT inexpensive ...

Besides, this is a present, for a special friend, I am planning to buy, as a surprise, for her birthday ... just wanted to know which everyone thought, is best!

Now as more pieces of the puzzle come into view, if she has a preference of canon or Nikon go with one of the kits from Costco either D3400 or T6 or T6i for me it was what was comfortable in wife’s hands (small and light) but still was manual enough with capabilities equal to film camera for me old school. Enjoy which ever you chose. I am sure they will be excited about it when received.

She is a total neophyte, Pete ... and would probably be happy with ANY camera, given her ... even a pocketable compact camera ...

Don't think she even KNOWS the names - Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax, Fuji, Panasonic or Olympus ... or what makes each brand unique.

But, it's my contention - in order to get anything out of photography - she needs something with which she can grow.

I just don't think - that a cellphone camera, falls into the same ballpark as a DSLR (OR, mirror-less, for that matter!!!)

Pete - those kits Costco sells (btw, am not a member) include cheapo 2nd lenses, that are basically throwaways ... (not AF, or not IS / VR)

The Nikon D3400, and T6 / T7, too, for that matter - don't have Auto-Clean Sensor Mechanisms ... which, seems to me - to be an extraordinary oversight for Beginner Cameras. The T6i does, as do all of Canon's Intelligent i-series cameras, and may be light, but is still heavier than the later Rebel T7i / EOS 77D.

You really need to be more advanced than most beginners, to take on the task of manually cleaning a sensor. It's okay, I guess, if you never plan on changing from the kit lens to something else, but, once you do ... you have to make yourself adept at housecleaning ....

Bill ... intuitive menus are a toss-up ... between the overall ease of Pentax (especially) and Canon - which are in logical sequence, L to R.

Sony uses part logical sequence, but then, also - a jump system - for special features.

Nikon uses an illogical system - requiring both jumps, and reversion to the main table ... which takes quite a lot of getting used to, if not familiar ...

It takes quite some time, to become acclimatized, to the menu system in whichever camera brand one chooses ...

Personally, I think - for outright beginners, the Pentax is hard to beat. But, then ... the Canon one is fairly easy to follow, too ...

Feel of a particular camera is something else, and changes from model to model, within brands ...

Flip a coin. You cant go wrong with Nikon or Canon. Go to the camera store and handle both. See where all the controls are. See what one feels best in your hands. They both will give you great photos. What brand do you have now? Your lens may work on your new camera. Both offer all the lens you will ever need. Make sure you deal with a good dealer. Even if you pay a little more you want someone that stands behind what they sell. You can always add more lens when you can afford them.
