How do you know when you reach 9999? Counting shots during a shoot? What happens if you miss a shot and pass 9999? Sounds like a lot of work to keep track of exactly where you are, then interrupt the shoot to change the 1st 3 characters.

Or do you just punt and change over at maybe 9900 if you only plan to take 50 shots or so?

I think renaming at download is the best solution. Ignore the camera's numbering.
(YMMV)

I watch the count which, to me is rather easy to do.

I am wondering if I can start my file numbering over at 0001? I have a Nikon D850 and according to the Custom Setting d7 you can reset it when it is turned off or hit the reset button. HOWEVER, when you again set it to ON the numbering reverts back to where it was originally.

I am about to take a trip and my numbering will roll over in about 2,000 photos of which I will probably far exceed so I would like all the photos from this trip to be in number sequence.

Thank you!

To start over at 001 might be asking for trouble. Unless you rename your files with something like "SomewhereElse-0001.NEF" when you import into your file management system, you might have trouble with duplicate file names. I do this in LR.

Just My $0.02 worth.
